FINAL RESULTS

CLARION--The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished fifth overall with 89.5 points at  the 37th annual Eastern Wrestling League Championships held at Clarion University.

The Huskies qualified three for the NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis. Earning automatic berths were Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) (157) and Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) (174) with their second place finishes, while Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) claimed the third spot after finishing third at 197 pounds.

In addition, the Huskies have a shot at gaining two additional qualifiers when the wild card bids are announced on Tuesday after Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) took third at 149 pounds and Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) finished fourth at 133 pounds.

Head coach John Stutzman was pleased with the effort of his guys.
"The guys wrestled well, " said Stutzman. "We had some good performances today from a number of individuals. As far as the team we wrestled well in spurts. Hopefully its a lesson we can grow from."

The NCAA Division I Championships will be held in St. Louis from March 15-17.

WEIGHT BY WEIGHT

At 125 pounds Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks), who was the number two seed in the tournament, dropped three matches on the day by a combined four points. After getting a bye to the semi-finals, Shane Young beat Boylan, 3-2. Then in the consolation bracket Korey Mines of Edinboro beat Boyland on a last second takedown to win 2-1. Then in the fifth place match Ben Willeford of Cleveland State scored a 3-1 decision to take fifth.
 
At 133 pounds Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) took fourth place for the Huskies. Wilcox opened the day with a win by fall in 1:15 over Joe Walko of Clarion, then lost to Sheldon Mack of Pitt, 5-4. In the consolation bracket Wilcox beat Josh Ruppert of Millersville, 13-10 before losing to Nick Pennesi of West Virginia, 7-1.
 
At 141 pounds Matt Hicks (Allentown (Annapolis, MD)/St. Mary's, MD) took sixth for the Huskies. Hicks lost to Mitchell Port of Edinboro in his opening match, then beat Aaron Trimpey of Millersville, 10-3. In the consolation semi's Hicks lost to Travis Shaffer of Pitt, then was pinned by Matt Bonson of Lock Haven in the fifth place match.

At 149 pounds Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) opened the day with a 12-8 win over Cam Moran of Clarion before falling to Tyler Nauman of Pitt, 9-3, in the semi-finals. In the consolation semi's Busler dominated Brustus Scheffel of West Virginia, 11-0, before knocking off Owen Wilkinson of Lock Haven 5-3 to claim third place.
 
In a rematch of last year's 157 pound final the Huskies Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) faced off with James Fleming of Clarion. The two wrestlers had split their two meetings this season. Fleming went up 2-0 with a first period takedown. After no scoring in the second period, Fleming chose down to start the third. Fleming escaped to go up 3-0 before Hickman got a takedown, but could not turn Fleming and lost 4-2.
 
Hickman started the day with a win by tech fall over Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush of Millersville, 18-1. In the semi-finals Hickman beat Donnie Tasser of Pitt 14-6 to move to the finals.
 
At 165 pounds Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) finished fifth after beating Jesse Swink of Edinboro 14-6. Smith started the day to Swink, 7-5. In the consolation bracket Smith posted a win by major decision over Dylan Caprio, 12-0, then lost in the consi semi-finals  9-7 to Corey Carlo of Cleveland State.
 
At 174 pounds Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), the defending champ at the weight, lost in the finals to Ethan Headlee of Pitt by a 2-0 score. After a scoreless first period Headlee was down to start and worked an escape to go on top 1-0 in the second. Headlee went on to win 2-0 and deny Dessino a repeat title.
 
Dessino started the day with his 15^th fall of the season pinning Aric Thurn of Cleveland State in 2:23. In the semi-finals Dessino beat Lance Bryson of West Virginia, 3-1, in OT to reach the finals and earn one of the three EWL qualifying spots for the NCAA championships at this weight.

At 184 pounds Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) took sixth losing 5-1 in the fifth-place match. Shirey won his first round consolation match 12-3 over Shane Smith of Millersville, 12-3 before dropping his next two matches.

At 197 pounds Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) earned his first trip to the NCAA championships taking third place. After getting an opening round bye, Perry lost to Matt Wilps of Pitt, 4-3, on a tie-breaker. In the consolation bracket, Perry beat Mac Mancuso of West Virginia, 3-2, before beating Alex Thomas of Clarion, 6-4 for the trip to nationals.

At 285 pounds Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) ended his career with a fifth place finish. Walsh beat Harry Turner of Lock Haven 5-3 for the fith place spot. Walsh ahd won his opening match before dropping his next two bouts.
