BLOOMSBURG—
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored seven goals and assisted on one other to lead the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to 16-10 win over Shippensburg on Wednesday in PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) action.
With Bloomsburg trailing 1-0, the Huskies
Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East) scored off a
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) assist to tie the game. Then Canavan scored her first goal with 22:10 left in the half to put the Huskies on top 2-1 before Shippensburg came back with two straight scores to regain the lead at 3-2.
Falk scored her first goal with an assist from
Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) to tie the game at 3-3 before Shippensburg came back with a goal to take a 4-3 lead with 18:10 to go in the half. It stayed 4-3 till the 9:06 mark when Canavan scored unassisted knotting the game at 4-4. Later, after Shippensburg went back on top, Canavan scored consecutive goals for the Huskies putting Bloomsburg on top 6-5 with 1:11 to before half. But Shippensburg was able to get the equalizer with 13 seconds to go and the teams went to the break tied at 6-6.
In the second half the Huskies got out of the gate quickly scoring four straight goals. King got things going for the Huskies before Canavan scored of a
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) assist to make it 8-6. Draham then hit the back of the net with Falk adding the fourth straight goal for Bloomsburg to make it 10-6 with 19:46 to go in the game.
The Raiders got their first goal of the second half with 16:13 remaining when Roxanne Brown scored. King though answered for the Huskies with 14:47 to play putting the Huskies on top 11-7. After Shippensburg scored with 10 minutes left to make it a three-goal lead for Bloomsburg before Canavan and King scored back-to-back making it a five goal edge, 13-8.
Later with the Huskies up 13-9 Bloomsburg put the game out of reach with three straight goals. Canavan,
Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) and Falk all scored in the final four minutes to make it 16-9. A later Shippensburg goal made the final 16-10.
Canavan finished with seven goals, while King added four goals. The senior is now tied for third all-time (with Kelly Cuthbert '89) at Bloomsburg in career goals with 156. Falk also scored three times. In goal
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) made eight saves.
Lindsey Kennedy scored three goals for Shippensburg, now 6-5, 2-4 in the PSAC.
Bloomsburg, 5-7, 3-4 in the PSAC, and will play at Millersville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
