Women's Lacrosse Falls to Mercyhurst

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team lost to Mercyhurst, 18-14 in a PSAC matchup at Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
 
The Huskies grabbed control of the game early when Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored off an assist from Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) within 40 seconds of play. Bloomsburg would add two more goals, one from Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) and one from Grace Malizia (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) off an assist from Falk within the first two minutes of the half.
 
Mercyhurst would score their first of the half at the 27:32 mark off an unassisted goal from Anna Legrett. The Lakers would add another after 4:24 minutes went by, cutting the Huskies lead to 3-2.
 
Mazzie would add her second of the day off an assist from Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) putting the Huskies up 4-2 at 22:34. Mercyhurst would add two more goals for the Lakers to tie up the game with over 20 minutes left in the half.
 
From there Bloomsburg scored three straight goals to take 7-4 lead. Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored twice, while Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) scored the other. However, Mercyhurst closed the first half by outscoring Bloomsburg 4-2 as the Huskies took a 9-8 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, the Lakers scored the first three goals to take their first lead of the game at 11-9 with 27 minutes to play. Bloomsburg cut the lead to one at the 23:18 mark behind goals from Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) and Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon).
 
The Lakers would go on to score four straight over the next 12 minutes to take a 16-11 lead. Bloomsburg rallied scoring three goals to Mercyhurst one, cutting the lead to 17-14 with 6:32 to play. Unfortunately, the Huskies were held scoreless for the first six and a half minutes as Mercyhurst won 18-14.
 
Mazzie finished the day with five goals, while King and Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) each added two goals a piece. In goal, Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) recorded four saves for the Huskies.
 
Bloomsburg, 4-5, 2-3 will travel to Erie, Pa. on Friday, April 6, as they play Gannon University in a PSAC match-up. Game time is set for 5 pm.
