Bloomsburg to Play for PSAC Title on Saturday

BOX SCORE

LOCK HAVEN—Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) and Samantha King (Elkton, MD/North East) each scored four goals to lead the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 win over #6 West Chester in the semi-final game of the 2012 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Championships in a game played in Lock Haven. Rain and lightning in the first half of play delayed the game for four hours and eight minutes.

The win was the second straight for the Huskies over West Chester after Bloomsburg snapped a 15-game losing streak (dating back to 2003) to the Golden Rams earlier this year.

Bloomsburg raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the game to quickly take control of the contest. King got the Huskies going with a goal just 58 seconds into the contest with Mazzie scoring 3:13 into the game on a free position shot. A few minutes later Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) and Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored just over a minute apart to put Bloomsburg up 4-0.

After a West Chester goal the Huskies answered with three straight scores. Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) scored off a Falk assist, then, King scored back-to-back goals for a 7-1 lead with 17:52 to play in the half.

The Golden Rams then scored two goals to make it a 7-3 game when play was halted for lightning and a heavy rainstorm stopping play for over four hours.

When play did resume around 8:30 p.m. the Huskies struck first with King scoring unassisted with 13:07 left in the half. West Chester though closed out the final 13 minutes outscoring the Huskies 4-1 making it a 9-7 lead for Bloomsburg at the break.

The Huskies opened the second half with a goal from Mazzie to go back up by three, 10-7. But, West Chester scored back-to-back goals and were within a goal with just over 25 minutes to play.

From there the two teams would trade goals over the next four minutes and with just over 21 minutes to go, Bloomsburg led by just one, 12-11.

Bloomsburg, though, closed out the game with three straight goals and the Huskies defense shut down the West Chester offense to pull out the four-goal win.

Along with Mazzie and King scoring, Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) added three goals and three assists for the Huskies, now 11-7. In goal Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) made five saves.

The Huskies will take on Mercyhurst Saturday at 4 p.m. for the PSAC title. The Lakers beat Lock Haven earlier in the day to advance to the finals.

Bloomsburg will be looking for its first PSAC championship since 2003.
