Box Score NYACK, NY – Junior
Anthony Manero (Richboro/Council Rock North) scored perhaps the biggest goal of his career on Saturday. Deadlocked at two, Manero drove in a header in overtime off a cross from
Miguel Diaz (Doylestown/Central Bucks East) to give the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College in the squads final game of the NYACK Tournament.
The 98th minute proved to be the difference maker in the Huskies (1-1 overall) first win of the season. Manero's header marked his first goal of the season as he'll now search for his first multi-goal season of his career.
Manero wasn't the only Husky achieving firsts in Saturday's non-conference battle against Roberts Wesleyan (0-2). Fellow defender and senior co-captain
John Owens (Jamison/Central Bucks East) scored the first goal of his career, and the first BU goal of 2012 in the 20th minute to give Bloomsburg the early lead.
Owen's memorable goal came off the second of BU's eight corner kicks on the afternoon. Diaz again found himself involved in the Huskies success as he served the ball in from the corner to find senior
Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg), who set up Owens for a one-time shot that found the top-right corner.
Saturday's contest was the definition of a back-and-forth affair. The Raiders' Brandon Bianchi knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal just before the end of the first half.
Junior
Michael Del Sordi (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) broke the tie in the 49th minute. Off a corner from
Wes Kammerer (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey), Del Sordi was able to make solid contact and drive the ball past RWC goalkeeper Michael Scavone to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Bloomsburg controlled the game from there on and nearly reached the final ten minutes of play with the lead. Bianchi was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute. He converted on the attempt for his second goal of the game, which would eventually force the game into overtime.
Junior goalkeeper
Bernie Roell (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) picked up the win for the Huskies. He played the entire game and made a pair of saves on his four shots faced.
As a team, Bloomsburg outshot Roberts Wesleyan, 17-11. It was able to keep the ball in opposing territory for most of the game, which resulted in an 8-1 corner kick advantage.
The overtime victory was the first regular season victory in extra-time since a 1-0 victory against East Stroudsburg in 2009. BU won on PK's against Lock Haven last season to advance to the conference championship game.
Bloomsburg returns home on Sept. 7 to face Pitt-Johnstown beginning at 7 p.m. It will start a stretch of five straight home games for the Huskies.
