Box Score KUTZTOWN – Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) scored a hat-trick Tuesday night including a pair of goals in the first six minutes of play to lead the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at University Field.
The Huskies (9-1 overall, 3-1 PSAC East) entered the contest ranked third in Tuesday's Penn Monto / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Poll. The loss was the Golden Bears' (3-6, 1-3) second in a row.
Fresh off a come-from-behind victory over East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Simonovich gave Bloomsburg the strong start it needed. She netted her first goal just 45 seconds into play to get the Huskies rolling. Sophomore
Candice Smith (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) set up Simonovich to make the most of Bloomsburg's first shot of the night. It was Smith's first assist of the season after recording three in her freshman campaign a year ago.
Simonovich's next score marked the senior's second multi-goal game of the season and fourth of her career. Her final goal of the night tied a career-high for goals in a game as a failed Kutztown clear resulted in Simonovich being able to control the ball in KU territory and get a shot on goal that found the back of the cage. She also netted a hat-trick earlier this season in Bloomsburg's 6-1 victory at Saint Anselm.
Simonovich has scored in three straight games, tying the longest stretch of her career set in 2011. She is second on the team with nine goals through ten games and continues to give the Huskies the aggressiveness they need moving forward.
Fellow senior
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) notched her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 25th minute. After nearly a 20-minute stint of back-and-forth hockey in which both teams had opportunities to build momentum, DiSabatino dribbled the ball in between Golden Bear defenders and put it past the KU keeper to extend the Husky lead to three.
Freshman
Kara Hartman (York Haven/Redland) rounded out the first-half barrage of goals in the 31st minute with her second career goal.
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) set up Hartman for her third assist of the year, good for second on the team.
The four first-half goals were the most since Bloomsburg scored five of its six in the first half against Indiana (PA) in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament last season.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) notched her ninth victory of the season. She's started all ten games for the Huskies and made one save Tuesday night to keep the Golden Bears in check.
Kutztown came out in the second half aggressive looking for its first goal of the night. It found some life in the 42nd minute off a goal from Anna Behm. It was the freshman's fourth of the season to tie a team-high. 12 of KU's 14 shots came in the second half.
Amber Aulenbach (Fleetwood/Oley Valley) closed out the scoring for Bloomsburg. The senior scored in the 63rd minute for her sixth goal of the season, good for third on the team.
Following Aulenbach's goal, freshman
Emiley Maiorana (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) took over in the cage for Eppley. She made three saves and didn't allow a goal in the second appearance of her career.
The win was Bloomsburg 49th against Kutztown, the most of any opponent. The last time the Huskies fell to the Golden Bears was in 1983 in double overtime.
Bloomsburg looks ahead to Friday's clash with second-ranked Shippensburg. Game time at Shippensburg on Friday, Sept. 28 is set for 4 p.m. Bloomsburg has won two in a row against the Raiders including the 2011 PSAC Championship game. The last SU win was in the 2010 NCAA semifinals.
