Box Score SHIPPENSBURG – The third-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team saw its five-game winning streak end Tuesday afternoon, as second-ranked Shippensburg was victorious on its home turf with a 4-1 victory at the Robb Sports Complex in non-conference action.
Friday's matchup featured two of the top three teams in Division II. The Huskies (9-2 overall) are ranked third in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll as the Raiders (10-1) dropped to second after they suffered their first loss of the season to Indiana (PA) last week.
Despite the score discrepancy, the Huskies went toe-for-toe with the Raiders. Bloomsburg outshot Shippensburg, 24-13, including 10-3 in the second half. The Huskies simply were unable to capitalize on its chances in front of the net.
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) notched her tenth goal of the season in the setback. The senior worked for a breakaway in the 44th minute and finished from the left side to put Bloomsburg on the board. The goal marked Simonovich's fourth straight game with a goal scored, the longest stretch of her career.
Like Bloomsburg did in its win over Kutztown earlier this week, Shippensburg scored in the opening minutes of the game to gain the early advantage. Sam Langone scored her third goal of the season just four minutes into play to give the Raiders a lead they wouldn't let up.
Taylor Jones and Emily Kohlbus scored in the 27th and 40th minute, respectively, to build Shippensburg's lead to as many as three before the Simonovich breakaway goal. SU's Lauren Taylor closed out the scoring at the 67:10 mark.
Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) made six saves in the cage. It was the third highest save total of the year for the junior, who has started in every game this season.
The Huskies kept the pressure on throughout the second half in hopes of climbing out of the early hole. Down 3-1 with less than ten minutes to play, Bloomsburg was awarded six penalty corners and got off as many shots but was unable to get any past the SU goalkeeper.
Senior
Jenna DiSabatino (Mountain Top/Crestwood) was active on the attack all game for Bloomsburg. Along with assisting on the Simonovich score, she had a game-high eight shots, six of which were on goal. Fellow seniors
Amber Aulenbach (Fleetwood/Oley Valley) and
Alexis Weber (Bear, DE/William Penn) also had multiple opportunities with six shots apiece.
The low scoring affair was a rare occurrence for the Huskies. Averaging four goals per game entering the match, it was only the second time this season Bloomsburg failed to tally a multi-goal game.
The Huskies will look to get back in the win column tomorrow as it continues play against Western Division opponents. Bloomsburg travels to Mansfield on Saturday, Sept. 29 with game time moved up to 11:30 a.m.
