BLOOMSBURG – Three second half goals propelled the sixth-ranked Bloomsburg field hockey team to a 3-0 Homecoming victory over Kutztown on Saturday afternoon at Sports Stadium. The game was also the Huskies annual Play 4 the Cure game to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.
After the two teams played to a scoreless first half tie, the Huskies (7-4, 3-1 PSAC) used a quick strike offense to break open the game.
Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) broke the deadlock with a penalty stroke goal at the 42:36 mark, the first of two scores within a span of less than a minute. At 43:18, Mathews passed a ball past the Golden Bears' keeper to
Felicia Domenici (Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) who was waiting in front for her 12th goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Bloomsburg put the game away when
Nikki Gattone (Reading/Muhlenberg) scored unassisted at 52:03, her second tally of the year.
The Husky defense was outstanding on the day, limiting Kutztown to just two shot attempts, one in each half, while finishing with nine shots of their own. Bloomsburg was awarded five penalty corners to Kutztown's three.
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill),
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) and
Emiley Maiorana (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) all saw time in the cage as part of the shutout. With the victory the Huskies have now registered three straight wins.
Kayla Denlinger made two saves and Rachael Sanders also had a save for the Golden Bears who drop to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in PSAC play.
Bloomsburg aims to continue its recent hot streak when it continues its home stand by hosting Slippery Rock on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4:00 p.m. inside Sports Stadium.Â
