BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University field hockey team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey championships with a 2-0 win over Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies will now face top-seeded Shippensburg University on Friday at 1 p.m. at Shippensburg.

Early on the game was played in the middle of the field with neither team getting a good offensive attack going. The first scoring chance did not come till 20:39 left in the opening half when IUP was awarded a penalty corner. The play, though, was broken up keeping it a scoreless game.

IUP had two more penalty corners on back-to-back plays between the 7:00 to 6:00 minute mark, but each time the Huskies defense, led by Jacklyn Beasley, denied the Crimson Hawks.

Then with just over four minutes left in the half Bloomsburg's Samantha Facciolla (Holland/Council Rock South) stole a ball and quickly moved up the field into the center of the circle. She then directed a shot towards the goal that was redirected by Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) putting Bloomsburg on top 1-0.

With the Huskies up at the break IUP came out immediately put the pressure on the Bloomsburg defense. IUP's Kendra Blantz took a shot that was saved by Bloomsburg goalie Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) with 33:21 to go in the game. On the rebound the Huskies were called for a foul on IUP's Kate Bruce in front of the goal and was awarded a penalty stroke.  Bruce's stroke attempt went to the upper left corner of the goal where Eppley knocked it down and cleared it away keeping it a 1-0 game.

Bloomsburg then began to pressure the IUP defense. With just over 30 minutes to play Brittany Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) was centered in the circle and drilled a shot that was saved by IUP's Darian Shuker. The Huskies continued to pound away being awarded five penalty corners, including three in a three-minute stretch. On the third corner, Beasley directed a pass out to Mathews who quickly directed the ball down to Gattone to the left corner of the goal. Shuker then moved over to block what would have been easy goal. But, Gattone then directed the ball to Sam Peters (Yeagerstown/Mifflin County), who had come in from the right side, who then tapped in the ball for a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute.

From there the Huskies offense controlled play and, when the ball did leave the offensive zone, the Huskies midfielders were there to send it back in. In the second half of play the Huskies held IUP to two shots on goal and just one corner attempt.

Bloomsburg goes to 13-6, while IUP ends its season at 8-11.
