BLOOMSBURG—The 17th-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team claimed its first-ever outright EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) Dual Meet title with a 30-7 victory over Lock Haven University on Friday night at the Nelson Field House.
Bloomsburg claimed the title by going a perfect 5-0 in league competition. The only other time the Huskies were EWL Dual Meet champs was in 1993 when they shared the title with Lock Haven.
At intermission of the match the Huskies honored its wrestling alumni who returned to watch the match.
The Huskies opened the match with win by
Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood) at 149 pounds. The senior scored two first period takedowns, then escaped twice in the third period to win 6-4. Bloomsburg made it a 9-0 lead at 157 pounds when 11th-ranked
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) won by fall.
Hickman and Elias Biddle were locked in a scoreless battle when Hickman got a takedown and then quickly turned Biddle to win in 2:43. The win was the 14th in the last 15 matches for Hickman.
At 165 pounds
Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), also ranked 11
th, scored an 11-4 win over Aaron McKinney. After a scoreless opening period, Veltre got a reversal to get on the board, then later got a takedown and two near fall points to lead 6-1 after two periods. Veltre added two more takedowns in the third to win his 21st straight match.
Bloomsburg's
Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) continued the winning at 174 pounds with a 6-2 win before the Bald Eagles got on the board with a victory by Fred Garcia.
At 197 pounds Bloomsburg's
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown), ranked 14th, got five takedowns and with a point for riding time won 12-7. At 285 pounds the Huskies
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton), ranked number 17, posted a tough come-from-behind win over Harry Turner, 4-3. Grant scored a takedown with 45 seconds left, then survived the final seconds after Turner had escaped.
Lock Haven's Robert Rehm beat then Huskies
Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks), 9-0, before Bloomsburg closed out the match with a win by
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) in tie breaker one, 6-5, and
Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) sent the large crowd home happy with a pin in 2:18 over Dan Neff.
The Huskies improved to 16-3 on the season and will close out its regular season with a match against Binghamton on Feb. 21 at the Nelson Field House. Lock Haven falls to 6-6 on the year.
