NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The 14th-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team was upset by Rutgers University, 18-16, Friday night snapping the Huskies eight-match winning streak.
Starting at 157 pounds Bloomsburg's
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) won for the 12th time in his last 13 matches scoring a pin 19 seconds into the second period. Hickman, who was up 4-0 at the time of the fall, improved to 21-4 on the year and now has 96 career wins.
The Huskies went up to 9-0 after 165 pounds when
Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) scored a 6-5 win over Nick Visicaro. The match was tied at 4-4 late in the third period when Veltre got a takedown with 16 seconds left to go on top 6-4. Visicaro got an escape with five seconds to go, but there was no other scoring. The win was the 28th of the season for Veltre and increased his winning streak to 20 straight.
At 174 pounds Rutgers got on the board when Anthony Volpe scored a 6-1 win over Bloomsburg's
Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor), which was followed by a 3-1 win from the Scarlet Knights' Dan Rinaldi at 184 who beat the Huskies
Andre Petroski (Glenn Mills/Springfield), 3-1.
Bloomsburg's
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown), ranked 16th, helped the Huskies stretch its lead to 13-6 after winning by major decision, 15-6. Perry led 6-2 after one period and 8-3 after two. Perry finished with seven takedowns in the match and had a point for riding time.
At 285 pounds the Huskies'
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton), ranked 16th, lost 5-3 to Rutgers' Billy Smith cutting the Bloomsburg lead to 13-9. Grant was trialing 3-1 in the third when he got a takedown with 43 seconds left to tie the score. But Smith escaped five seconds later to go on top 4-3. Grant was later penalized one point for a technical violation to lose by two.
At 125 pounds Bloomsburg's
Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) fell 6-1 to Joseph Langel cutting the lead down to 13-12.
Rutgers took its first lead of the night at 15-13 after Bloomsburg's
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central), ranked 12th, was upset by the Scarlet Knight's Vincent Dellefave, 3-2, on a late takedown.
Rutgers extended its lead to 18-13 after 141 pounds when Trevor Melde scored a 7-1 win over
Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) before Bloomsburg's
Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood), needing a win by tech fall to tie or fall to win, could only come away with a 5-0 win by decision.
The Huskies, 14-3, will be back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. visiting George Mason University.
