BLOOMSBURG—
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) scored the go-ahead goal with 1:37 left to lift the 14th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over the Lake Erie Storm Saturday afternoon. The game was played in a steady spring snowstorm at Sports Stadium.
The win was the first for Huskies new head coach Mallory Poole.
BU got on the board first with an unassisted goal two minutes into the first half by Metzler. Lake Erie answered back with a goal of its own one minute later to tie the score 1-1.
Bloomsburg and Lake Erie went back and forth the rest of the half. Bloomsburg had two goals to lead 5-3 with five minutes left in the half. Lake Erie Storm responded with three goals in a row to go up 6-5 at the half.
The Huskies started the first half with a 3-0 run with a goal by
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) at 22:47,
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) at 20:37, and one by
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) at 19:25 to put BU on top 8-6.
Lake Erie scored three goals in the next three minutes to have a one goal edge on the Huskies with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
Bloomsburg scored the last three goals of the game to rally for the win. The Huskies tied the game at 9-9 when Mazzie scored unassisted with 5:41 to play. BU scored the next two goals in the last two minutes of play for the victory. Metzler's shot found the back of the net after a pass from Falk at 1:37 to put BU up by one goal. Falk scored an insurance goal with 1:00 to go on a free position shot.
Falk led the BU offense with a hat-trick and also dished out two assists for five points. Mazzie added four points for BU with two goals and two assists.
In net for Bloomsburg
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) stopped six shots, while leading the team in groundballs with four.
For Lake Erie, Julia Kudla had seven points from two goals and dishing out five assists. In goal Katie Holden had seven saves. The Lake Erie Storm drops to 3-2 on the season.
The Huskies move to 1-1 with the victory, and are back in action at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, Mar. 19 at 4 p.m.
