BELMONT, NC—
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) tied her career-high with seven goals to fuel the No. 15 Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team past Belmont Abbey, 15-12, Tuesday in a non-conference match-up in North Carolina.
The Huskies scored the first two goals of the game. First was a goal by
Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) off a pass from
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) just two minutes into the game. The second goal was by
Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) at 24:57 putting BU ahead 2-0.
Belmont Abbey got onto the board 10 minutes into the game with an unassisted goal by Rebecca Diggs to make the score 2-1. Diggs finished the game with two goals for the Crusaders who move to 4-5 on the season.
Falk scored her first of seven goals at the 18 minute mark in the first half off a free position shot to put the Huskies up 3-1.
Later the Huskies closed out the final 14 minutes of the first half outscoring the home team 5-3 to go up 10-6 at the break with Falk scoring twice.
Belmont Abbey started the second half strong scoring two goals in the opening two minutes to pull them within two of BU by a score of 10-8.
Falk came back for the Huskies two of the game's next three goals to put Bloomsburg on top 12-9 with 16:24 to play. Belmont Abbey, though, rallied to within one by scoring back-to-back goals, the second with 12:07 to play.
Off another free position shot Falk scored to maintain BU's lead over Belmont and made the score 13-11 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Crusaders scored their final goal of the game with five minutes left to make the score 13-12, still trailing the Huskies.
Metzler put one past the goalie with 1:23 on the clock to give the Huskies a two-goal lead.
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored an insurance goal for Bloomsburg with just 21 seconds remaining to give the Huskies a 15-12 win over the Crusaders.
In goal
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) recorded another win and made five saves in the game. She also recorded four ground balls in the victory.
On defense,
Aubrey Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) had a team-high eight groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg, who moves to 2-1 on the season, outshot Belmont Abbey 30-12 and controlled draw controls with a 17-12 advantage.
The Huskies are back in action Wednesday against the third-ranked Limestone Saints at 3:30 p.m.
