PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP INFO
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team defeated Millersville 14-12 Saturday in the final game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season at Sports Stadium where the Huskies honored their seven seniors. The win clinched the number five spot in the PSAC playoffs.
Between both teams there were 11 goals in the first 11 minutes of play. The Huskies (9-7 overall, 7-4 PSAC) scored the first goal of the game 23 seconds in when
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) beat the Millersville keeper.
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) was assisted by
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) for the next goal a minute later to go up 2-0 over the Marauders.
Millersville (9-7, 4-7) scored with 27:28 on the clock followed by two back-to-back goals by
Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford). The first was assisted by Metzler and the second was a free position shot giving the Huskies a 4-1 edge.
The Marauders snuck a shot into the back of the net with 22 minutes remaining. For the Huskies next goal Falk received the draw control and launched an alley-oop pass to Moley who was wide open and sprinted down and scored to go up 5-2.
Millersville responded with a 3-0 run in three minutes to make the score tied at 5.
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) found
Grace Malizia (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) open in front for a goal at 18:50.
Neither team scored in the next 15 minutes until the Marauders had a goal with 3:40 on the clock.
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored with 11 seconds left to give Bloomsburg a 7-6 lead at the half.
Moley started off the second half with an unassisted Huskies goal. Millersville scored another followed by a Mazzie goal assisted by
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ) to go up 9-7 with 27 minutes remaining. Millersville scored the next three goals before
Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) had a garbage goal to make the score tied up at 10.
Following a Marauders score the Huskies went on a 4 goal run.
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored two in a row first off a pass from Metzler. The second was after Canavan got the draw control and ran the ball down beating the goalie in a total of nine seconds.
Mazzie assisted to Falk at 4:56 and Falk assisted to Moley ten seconds later to finish out the Huskies scoring. Millersville had the final goal of the game with two minutes left for a final score of 14-12.
In goal
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) made 10 saves, many of them point blank stops to ensure the victory. With 17 seconds left in the game Bates made a huge interception in the 8-meter causing a Millersville turnover. She finished with three groundballs.
On defense
Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) and
Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) each had two caused turnovers a piece. Falk dominated on the draw snatching career-high 10 draw controls.
Moley finished with a team-high five goals followed by Canavan with three. Mazzie and Falk each added two goals, while Metzler dished out three assists.
The Hukies travel to Mercyhurst on Tuesday April 30 for a 4 p.m. PSAC quarterfinal matchup at Tullio Field.
