BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg University opened the second half with a 5-1 run to break open a close game and went on to defeat Gannon in PSAC women's lacrosse action.
Leading 5-3 at the start of the second half,
Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) took an assist from
Kelsey Metzler (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) just over two minutes in and extended the Huskies' lead to three.
Neither team scored over the next seven minutes before BU scored three times in less than two minutes.
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored unassisted with 20:43 to play. Metzler then scored back-to-back goals to put the Huskies on top 9-3 with 18:48 remaining. After Gannon trimmed the lead to five, Canavan extended the lead to 10-4 at the midway point of the second half.
Three straight goals by the Golden Knights appeared to pull them back into the game, but
Ashley Bossert (Ambler/Wissahickon) stopped the run with an unassisted score at 10:01. Her goal started a 4-1 spurt to end the game that included goals by
Sam Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown),
Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) and Falk in the last 5:07.
Eight different players scored in a balanced attack for Bloomsburg. Mazzie led the Huskies with three goals in the contest, while Metzler had four points from a pair of scores and two assists. Bossert and Falk each had two goals and an assist, while
Patrice Coleman (Media/Penncrest ) netted one score and two helpers. Canavan had two goals and
Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) dished out two assists.
Sara Bates (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the first 59 minutes in goal, stopped six shots and led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kate Stricker (Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross) played the final minute of goal in relief.
In the first half, the Huskies opened the scoring with the first two of Mazzie's three tallies of the afternoon, but Gannon tied the game with 19:12 left in the period. Goals by Coleman, Bossert and
Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) stretched the advantage to 5-2 before a late goal by GU cut the Bloomsburg advantage to two at the intermission.
For Gannon, Jess Fugate, Christie Valentine, and Natalie Bonnepart each had two goals and an assist. Margaret Maslyn made 10 saves.
Bloomsburg outshot the Golden Knights 33-20 in the contest and held advantages in ground balls (12-7) and draw controls (14-10). The Huskies committed just six turnovers on the afternoon and forced Gannon into 10.
BU's 14 goals were the second most by the Huskies this season, while the eight goals allowed marked the second best defensive effort by the squad.
The victory wrapped up a four-game home stand for Bloomsburg, who travels to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. PSAC match on April 13.
