STORYLINE
After winning their past two games, the Bloomsburg field hockey team has thoughts of an upset when it travels to play the top-ranked team in Division II, Shippensburg this Saturday. Aside from the implications to the national rankings, Saturday's game will also be the first contest to count toward the PSAC standings.
LAST TIME OUT
(
Box Score) Bloomsburg scored a commanding 5-0 victory at Kutztown on Tuesday night. The Huskies grabbed the lead at 26:13 on a rebound goal from
Sam Peters (Yeagerstown/Mifflin County) and struck again just over a minute later on a score from
Samantha Facciolla (Holland/Council Rock South). The Huskies added plenty of insurance with three second half goals while
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) and the Husky defense preserved the shutout.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
The Raiders have earned the top spot in the latest NFHCA Division II Top 10 after starting out the season by winning their first seven contests. Shippensburg has been dominant, outscoring its opposition 34-9 thus far and has fired off 180 shots as compared to just 51 by its opposition. Shippensburg defeated Mercyhurst, 5-1, in Erie on Tuesday and will also play on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Mansfield at home before welcoming in Bloomsburg on Saturday. A total of 16 players returned from last year's NCAA Playoff team, including reigning NFHCA Division II Player of the Year forward Bre White and two-time All-American center back Katie Shoop. White leads the team with eight goals and 22 points while Megan Jett and Lauren Taylor each have five goals and 10 points apiece.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Bloomsburg leads, 44-13-1.
LAST MEETING
(
Box Score) Shippensburg scored a 4-1 home victory on Sept. 28, 2012. The Raiders scored early at 3:43 and held the advantage throughout.
Brooke Simonovich (East Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) had the lone goal for the Huskies while
Megan Eppley (Camp Hill/Camp Hill) made six saves in the cage.
PETERS' NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Freshman
Sam Peters (Yeagerstown/Mifflin County) enjoyed a breakout game at Kutztown on Tuesday night, powering the Husky offense with three goals
. Peters got the Huskies offense going, hitting the back of the cage in the 27th minute to make it 1-0. In the second half it was all Peters as she scored two more goals in just under 11 minutes of play. Her second goal of the game came in the 55th minute when she scored unassisted. Her third goal came on an assist from
Felicia Domenici in the 61st minute for a 4-0 lead. Peters now has four goals and nine points in her Husky debut.
DOMENICI ADDS TO POINT TOTAL
Felicia Domenici (Kunkletown/Pleasant Valley) added to her team-leading goal total with her ninth of the season on Tuesday. The junior had tallied two career goals and six career points entering the season, but through seven games this year she has already totaled nine goals and two assists for 20 points. As of Wednesday, Domenici was tied for the PSAC lead in goals with East Stroudsburg's Ally Roth and was third in points (Bre White, Shippensburg, 22).
THIS TIME IT COUNTS
Under the new one division set up the PSAC adopted for field hockey this year, none of the Huskies' previous contests, even those against other PSAC teams, have counted in the conference standings to this point. That changes on Saturday as all games vs. PSAC opponents will count toward the conference standings from this point on.
UP NEXT
The Huskies travel to Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 6:30 p.m. contest. Their next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 9 vs. East Stroudsburg at Sports Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
