Wrestling Team Rolls Past Cleveland State

BLOOMSBURG—The 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts on the night and rolled to an easy 30-8 win over Cleveland State on Friday in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matchup at the Nelson Field House.
 
Bloomsburg jumped out to the early lead on the strength of a major decision win by Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) at 125 pounds and a Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) win by technical fall at 133 pounds.
 
Cleveland State came back and won the next two weights by major decision and tech fall to knot the score at 9-9.
 

Richard Perry 100 wins
The Huskies regained the lead at 157 pounds when Kevin Hartnett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) scored a tough 9-8 win over RJ LaBeef of Cleveland State. After the match though both wrestlers were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct with a team point being deducted from the two squads leaving Bloomsburg on top, 11-8.
 
Bloomsburg then followed with wins at the next two weights with 15th-ranked Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) winning 8-3, while Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) won 3-0 at 174 pounds. For Dessino it was his 96th career victory.


The Huskies closed out the match with a pin from Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) at 184 pounds, while fourth-ranked Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) won 21-8 at 197 pounds and 16th-ranked Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) won 8-3.
 
With the win Bloomsburg evens its mark at 6-6, 2-2 in the EWL, while the Vikings fall to 1-7, 0-2 in the EWL. The Huskies return to the mats on Sunday at 2 p.m. hosting Clarion University.
