Wrestling Team Falls Short With Clarion

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling match with Clarion came down to the final seconds of the final bout, but the Golden Eagles held on for a 24-19 win Sunday afternoon in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup at the Nelson Field House.
 
The Huskies trailed 21-13 going to the 197-pound matchup when Bloomsburg's Dominic Carfagno (West Paterson, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) earned a win by fall to close the gap. After a scoreless first period his opponent, Dustin Conti, chose bottom to start the second period. Carfagno then quickly turned Conti and got the pin just eight seconds into the period to make is 21-19.
 
With the match coming down to the 285-pound bout, Bloomsburg's Saul Wilkins (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR) and Clarion's Evan Daley battled for seven minutes. The first period was scoreless with Daley then taking bottom after Wilkins deferred. Daley then escaped and led 1-0 going to third period. In the third Wilkins looked for chances to take a shot, but Daley kept moving. With 25 seconds to go, Daley was called for stalling giving Wilkins one more chance to score a takedown. On the attempt by Wilkins, Daley was able to counter and got the takedown himself to win the match 3-0 and clinch a team win for Clarion.
 
Bloomsburg raced out to a 6-0 lead after two matches with Jon Haas (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) winning by decision. After Clarion won by forfeit at 141, Ryan Snow (Dexter, NY/General Brown) and Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) picked up back-to-back wins for Bloomsburg with Colbert winning by major decision, 15-6.
 
Clarion won by DQ at 165, then earned victories at 174 and 184 to open the 21-13 lead and set up an exciting final two bouts.
 
Bloomsburg falls to 0-4, 0-1 EWL, while Clarion is 2-3, 1-0 EWL. The Huskies are back in action on Friday hosting Purdue at 7 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
