Match Preview: Wrestling Team to Open Season on Saturday

at Eastern Michigan Duals, Nov. 7, 2015

SETTING THE SCENE...
•Bloomsburg begins the season at the Eastern Michigan Duals and will face off with #27 Kent State; Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.

• Bloomsburg will once again feature a lineup with many new faces. The Huskies will feature new wrestlers in at least five weight classes this season (149, 157, 165, 174, 184).

•Bloomsburg has one ranked wrestler according to the Wrestling Report.com. Transfer T.C. Warner (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley ) is ranked 33rd at 149 lbs in the latest rankings. Warner wrestled last season at Old Dominion last year and posted a record of 27-14 for the Monarchs.

• Among the returning wrestlers for the Huskies are Jon Haas (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) and Michael Mirra (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood). Haas posted a mark of 11-17 a year ago, while Schutz was 15-18 and Mirra was
12-18. Both Schutz and Haas were sixth at the EWL Championships a year ago.

• The Huskies will feature four true freshman in the lineup on Saturday. Michael Morris (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) (165); Kyle Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) (174); Nick DePalma (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) (184) and Shawn Spiller (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) (285).

Morris is a walk-on for the Huskies, while DePalma was 130-36 in his high school career with Wojtaszek posting a mark of 87-16. Spiller posted a record of 40-1 as a senior and in his career was 110-20 with 36 pins.

• The Huskies will face several ranked wrestlers this weekend. From Kent State: Mack McGuire (17th at 133 lbs); Mike DePalma (26th at 149); Ian Miller (3rd at 157); Cole Baxter (27th at 184); and Mimmo Lytle (25th at 285). From EMU: Jake Davis (33rd at 174); Adam Abro (11th at 197) and from Northern Illinois: Shawn Scott (25th at 197).

• All-time series records: Kent State (1-2); Eastern Michigan (2-1); Northern Illinois (0-1)

On This Opening Weekend
This will be a good test for our guys early in the season facing a number of highly ranked opponents.  

Kent Sate is one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference and is nationally ranked, while our other opponents are both up and coming programs with some very talented wrestlers. This will be a very competitive day for us.

TEAM NOTES

CAPTAINS NAMED
The captains of the 2015-16 Bloomsburg University wrestling team will be Kevin Laubach (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) and Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area).
 
Laubach, a junior, wrestled at 149 pounds a year ago for the Huskies winning 13 matches. He was a PSAC and EWL placewinner taking sixth at both events.
 
 Schutz, a junior and wrestling at 133 pounds, was second on the team with 15 wins last season. He was a PSAC placewinner taking third as well as an EWL placewinner finishing sixth.
 
CLARION OPEN
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team sent several members of its team to Clarion Open to start the 2015-16 season. Competing as attached members were Sam Holandez (Carson, Ca./Carson) (Carson, Ca./Carson) at 125 pounds; Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Alex Wolfe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) at 157 pounds. In addition 10 other wrestlers competed unattached.
 
Holandez finished the day going 2-3 losing in the quarterfinals in the championship round, then falling in the consolation round of four to end his day. Colbert went 2-2 on the day winning two bouts in the consolation bracket, while Wolfe was 0-2.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Huskies will once again feature a challenging schedule with four nationally ranked opponents listed (Lehigh, Edinboro, Rider and Kent State)
 
HOME OPENER
Bloomsburg will open its 2015-16 season on Sunday, Nov. 15 hosting Clarion and will then face off with Big 10 foe Purdue on Friday, Nov. 20. The Huskies will then not have another home match until January 24 when it entertains Brown.
