ST. LEO, Fla. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team led at halftime in a bid for an upset of No. 5 Limestone on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of St. Leo University, but a second half push from the undefeated Saints sent Limestone to a 15-9 victory.
Limestone (7-0) got on the board first with a goal from Taylor Cline less than three minutes in, but the Huskies then ran off a string of three consecutive goals within a two-minute span for a 3-1 lead.
Julie Falk (Millersville/Penn Manor) scored off a free position shot at the 22:21 mark, and then scored again unassisted less than 90 second later for the lead. Julia Stauffer (Reinholds/Cocalico) kept the roll going by scoring off a free position shot of her own less than 40 seconds after Falk's second tally.
The two teams saw momentum go back-and-forth for much of the rest of the first half.
Limestone scored the next two goals for the 3-3 tie, but Nikki Fisher (Warminster/Gwynedd Mercy Academy ) found the net off an assist from Morgan Sherriff (Downingtown/Coatesville) for a 4-3 lead with 12:22 left in the half, and four minutes later, Fisher then set up Carly Ball (Lansdale/North Penn) for another Huskies goal and a 5-3 advantage.
Bloomsburg and Limestone then exchanged goals, but scores from Sheriff and Brigid Kyne (Newtown Square/Marple Newtown) gave the Huskies a 7-5 edge with 5:01 left in the opening period before Limestone scored on a goal from Keirsten MacLellean two minutes before intermission to give the Huskies a 7-6 lead at the break.
It did not take long for the Saints to score the equalizer as Sam McCarrick scored unassisted 52 seconds into the second half for the 7-7 tie.
McCarrick also notched the next Limestone goal nearly seven minutes later, giving the Saints the lead back at the 22:18 mark. Limestone scored five unanswered goals for a 10-7 lead before Sheriff assisted Marisa Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) with 8:49 to play to end the Huskies drought.
Bloomsburg pulled to within 10-9 with still 7:43 remaining when Moley found Ball in front for Ball's second goal of the game, putting the Huskies right back in it.
Limestone responded, however, as Jaylen Schulte scored unassisted 57 seconds after Ball's tally to start a 5-0 run by the Saints to end the game, with the final two goals coming over the last 1:03 of game time.
Ball scored three times Falk had two goals to lead Bloomsburg with Moley and Sherriff adding two assists each. Moley's four shots paced the Huskies.
Limestone was powered by five goals apiece from Schulte and MacLellan with each player notching seven shots as well.
Sydney Teeter earned the win in net for Limestone with eight saves. Brittany Hegarty also turned away eight shots for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg led in shots, 16-13, during the first half, but Limestone held a 17-6 advantage in the second half for a 30-22 total edge on the day.
The Huskies are next in action at Holy Family in Philadelphia on March 19.
