STORYLINE
The seventh-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team will look for another signature victory on Saturday when it hosts second-ranked Shippensburg. The Huskies, ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll, would make its case stronger for a potential NCAA playoff spot with a win. Both teams have clinched a spot in the PSAC playoffs. Bloomsburg leads the all-time series against Shippensburg, 45-18-1.
LAST TIME OUT
Bloomsburg scored three goals in the final 7:41 at Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon to come-from-behind to stun The Rock, 3-2.
MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) scored with 7:41 left in regulation and then
Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) scored twice in the final 88 seconds to complete the comeback. The win clinched a playoff berth into the PSAC Tournament for the Huskies.
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) stopped three shots in the win.
Shippensburg, meanwhile, took care of Kutztown on Wednesday by a score of 2-0. Rajchel Moore and Emily Barnard scored the Raiders' goals six minutes apart early in the second half and Ally Mooney earned her 11th shutout with a two-save performance.
LAST MEETING
The two teams last met in the PSAC Quarterfinals on November 3, 2015 when the Huskies, seeded sixth in the tournament, upset third-seeded Shippensburg, 3-2, in overtime to advance to the semifinals.
Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) gave the Huskies the victory just 22 seconds into the extra session off of an assist from
Tali Wehner (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg).
Laura Gerhard (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) and
Jackie Shragher (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) also scored for Bloomsburg. Kendall Beck scored twice for the Raiders.
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) stopped four shots in the win while Taylor Webser had six saves in a losing effort.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
Bloomsburg is 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the PSAC standings. The Huskies clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament with their thrilling come-from-behind victory at Slippery Rock on Wednesday. The Huskies are ranked seventh in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA poll and are ranked fifth in the latest Division II Atlantic Region poll. Bloomsburg has outscored its opponents this season by a 42-13 margin and is ranked third in the PSAC in scoring offense and tied for third in scoring defense. Senior
Sam Peters (Harrisburg, Pa./Mifflin County) is putting a stamp on a stellar four-year career by leading the team in scoring with 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. She has scored at least one goal in six straight and in seven of the last eight. Peters is second in the PSAC in goals (12) and tied for third in points (26). MacKenna Mahan (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) (5g, 4a) have each contributed 14 points on the season and are tied for second on the team in scoring. In goal, senior
Lindsay Cassel (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) is 12-5 with a 0.75 goals against average and an .854 save percentage. She also has nine shutouts on the year. She ranks in the top three in the PSAC in all three categories.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
Shippensburg is 15-2 overall and 8-1 in the PSAC. The Raiders are second in both the Penn Monto/NFHCA poll and the Division II Atlantic Region rankings. Defense is Shippensburg's bread-and-butter as the Raiders lead the country by only allowing six goals in 17 contests this season (0.34). Katelyn Grazan leads the team offensively with nine goals and one assist for 19 points. Emily Barnard has chipped in six goals and two helpers for 14 points. Noelle Kephart (13), Brooke Zeiders (13), and Cassie Rawa (10) are also in double figures in scoring. In goal, Ally Mooney leads the country in goals against average (0.29), save percentage (.917), and shutouts (11). She is 15-2 on the season and has played all but 31 minutes in goal this season.Â
