Wrestling Team Falls in Heartbreaker on Saturday

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team rallied from an 18-12 deficit to tie the match at 18-18 with one bout remaining against George Mason University on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. However, the Patriots came away with a 24-18 victory after winning the final match of the day by fall.  It was the EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) opener for both teams.

The match was back and forth from the start with the Patriots jumping out to a 6-0 lead after the heavyweight match (the day began with the 285 lb. bout). The Huskies though rallied and took a 9-6 lead after win by major decision from Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) at 125 lbs. and a victory by technical fall from Matt Noble (Bridgewater, NJ/DePaul Catholic (NJ)) at 133 lbs. Both Girard and Noble dominated their matches with Girard posting a 13-1 win and Noble winning, 25-9.

George Mason came back and regained the lead at 12-9 with wins at 141 and 149 lbs. Bloomsburg, though, picked up a win by decision from Brendon Colbert (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) at 157 lbs. to knot the score at 12-12.

The Patriots bounced back and got a second period fall at 165 lbs. to regain the lead, 18-12, before the Huskies rallied again to tie the match. Trevor Allard (Mexico, NY/Mexico) won 5-3 at 174 lbs. and Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) posted a 4-0 win at 184 lbs. to bring the match down to the final bout.

At 197 lbs the Huskies Tyler Worthing (New Kensington, Pa/Kiski Area) was the aggressor early in the action continually looking for the takedown against Matt Meadows with Meadows being called for stalling just a minute into the action. Then with about 30 seconds to go in the period some hand fighting took place with Meadows rolling into a takedown. He quickly got Worthing tilted and scored the win by fall with 10 seconds to go in the period giving the visitors the win.

Bloomsburg is now 3-5, 0-1 EWL, while the Patriots go to 1-3, 1-0 in the EWL. Bloomsburg wrestles at the PSAC Championships on Dec. 10 at Lock Haven.
