Box Score BLOOMSBURG—Sophomore Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) recorded a career-high five goals to lead the Bloomsburg women's lacrosse team to a 17-12 win over Holy Family in the first game of the season.
The Huskies (1-0) scored a victory in their opening game for the first time since 2011, while the Tigers of Holy Family (0-2) dropped their second consecutive contest.
The five goals scored by Turner were the most in any game of her career. Her previous career-high for goals was four against Gannon in March of 2015.
Sophomore Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) nabbed the first goal of the season for Bloomsburg just 48 seconds into the contest, but Holy Family answered less than a minute later off of a shot from Devon Felix. The Tigers would take the lead with 26:07 to play after Paige Settar's shot found its way into the back of the net.
Freshman Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) tallied her first goal of the year, but two more Holy Family scores made it a 4-2 game in favor of the visitors with 22:25 left in the first half. After several turnovers by both teams, the Huskies would score four goals in a four-minute stretch giving them a 6-4 advantage. Rusen tallied her second goal of the game followed by scores from junior Brigid Kyne (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Turner. Kyne recorded her second goal of the game with 15:10 left to play, capping off the offensive burst by Bloomsburg.
Holy Family responded with goals by Erin Harmer and Paige Settar within a 27-second span to tie knot the game at six apiece with 14 minutes to play in the first half.
Jaskuta notched her second goal of the game with 12:51 left to push Bloomsburg ahead, 7-6, with 12:51 left in the half, but that would be the last goal for over eight minutes as the teams were unable to find the net.
Turner broke the scoring drought with a free position shot goal at the 4:17 mark, and Hannah Getz (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) chipped in her first collegiate goal to give the Huskies a 9-6 lead with under two minutes left in the half.
Nicole Braungart would score for Holy Family to cut the lead to just two, 9-7,with 45 seconds left, but Turner would sneak in her third goal of the game with 28 seconds remaining to give Bloomsburg a 10-7 lead going into the break.
Holy Family would score for four of the first five goals to open the second half, with Turner's fourth goal of the game being the only Husky goal in that span, tying the contest at 11 apiece with 17 minutes to play.
From there it was almost all Bloomsburg as it scored five goals in a four minute period that gave the Huskies a 16-11 lead. Freshman Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Kate Shea (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) recorded their first goals to start the scoring barrage and were followed by Kyne's third and Coyle's second goals of the game respectively. Junior Nikki Fisher (Warminster, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy ) would score her first of the year to cap off the 5-0 run by Bloomsburg with 11:10 to play.
Holy Family would score to make it a 16-12 contest with under seven minutes left in the game, but Turner responded with her fifth and final goal of the game just 44 seconds later to cement a 17-12 win for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies travel to play Pfeiffer University on Monday, March 7. Game-time is set for 4:00 p.m.
