COMPLETE RESULTS
ERIE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team had a strong afternoon in the pool on Saturday as the Huskies took care of Gannon University, 178-83, at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool. With the win, the Huskies won their third consecutive dual to improve to 3-1 on the season while the Golden Knights dropped to 0-3 on the year.
Bloomsburg had 11 victories and posted 22 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks on the afternoon.
Freshman
Carlie Owens (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) had the best performance of her young career as she posted two individual victories and was part of the 400-yard medley relay team the opened the meet with a win. Sophomore
Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) had two individual wins while senior
Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville), senior
Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest), and sophomore
Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) each had an individual and a relay victory.
McHugh's time of 5:11.80 in the 500-yard freestyle broke the Gannon pool record which was previously held by Bloomsburg assistant coach,
Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley), in 2012.
The Huskies opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard medley relay and never looked back. The Huskies' "A" team of Mercer, Owens, Mooney, and Boylan grabbed the victory with a time of 4:04.06 and out-touched the "B" foursome of McHugh, senior
Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area), senior
Sammie Carroll (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and junior
Shannon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) by just under four seconds.
Junior
Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) started the individual races off on the right foot with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle as the Huskies finished 1-2-3 in the event. Cubbler won with a time of 10:51.89 which was followed sophomore
Chelsea Ackerson (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert), who touched the wall in 11:10.71, and freshman
Emily Smith (Youngwood, Pa./Hempfield), who posted a mark of 11:40.38.
Two events later,
Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) started a string of four consecutive Bloomsburg victories when she got in the win column with a time of 1:00.51 in the 100-yard backstroke as she edged out Mercer by a little more than a second. Owens then won the 100-yard breaststroke after touching the wall of 1:09.20, just ahead of sophomore
Kristen Bane (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) who was second with a time of 1:11.35. Carroll followed with a win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:19.39 - four-tenths of a second faster than Smith who was second. Finally, Boylan won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.85.
Mercer got the Huskies going again when she posted a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.69 - nearly four seconds faster than Wadsworth who was second. Owens took the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.10 which was two seconds faster than Carpenter who was second. McHugh followed with her pool record in the 500-yard freestyle as she out-distanced the field by just under 23 seconds. Mooney then claimed the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.28 and McHugh earned her second victory of the day with a time of 2:13.37 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Bloomsburg will return home to take on Clarion University at the Nelson Field House Pool on Friday, November 9. Start time of the meet is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
