STORYLINE
The Huskies take on No. 21 Mercyhurst in the quarterfinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament on Tuesday (May 1). This is the second time that the Huskies have qualified for the tournament under head coach
Shannon Hertz. The Lakers come into the tournament ranked No. 21 in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll.
ALL-TIME SERIES
This will be the 24th all-time meeting between Bloomsburg and Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst holds a 13-10 series lead.
LAST MEETING
No. 21 Mercyhurst defeated Bloomsburg back on Mar. 17 by a score of 14-9 at BU's Steph Pettit Stadium. Mercyhurst scored the first two goals of the game within the first minute to go up 2-0.
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got the scoring started for BU with a free position goal for her fourth of the season, before
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored her fourth of the season from
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) in a woman-up situation.
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) would score unassisted at 13:32 to put Bloomsburg up 3-2, before Mercyhurst would tally a goal at 10:54 to tie the game at three-apiece. Mercyhurst scored to take a 4-3 lead with nine minutes left in the first half, before taking the 4-3 lead to the break. Another woman-up goal from Rusen assisted by Turner would start the second half, before
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) scored from
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) 2:31 into the half to put Bloomsburg up 6-4. Two Laker goals from tied the game at six, before Gormley and Mercyhurst traded goals to leave the game tied at seven-all with 13 minutes to play. Mercyhurst would out-score Bloomsburg 7-2 in the last 13 minutes to pull away for the conference victory.
Five Huskies scored in the loss, led by three from Rusen. Gormley and Jaskuta each scored twice, while Turner and Dempsey each tallied one goal. Bloomsburg collected 31 ground balls to Mercyhurst's 29, with
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) grabbing a game-high seven.
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) each picked up four, while
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) recorded three. Four others had two each, while another five players each scooped up one. Mercyhurst won the battle for draw controls 17-8, while BU was led by Turner and
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) with three each. Gormley and
Erin Boulger (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) each grabbed one. The Huskies also caused 17 of Mercyhurst's 28 turnovers, with a team-high three from Schappert. Turner,
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Nocito each caused two, while eight others caused one turnover apiece in the loss. DiPasquale (2-2) took the loss in the cage, making 10 saves.
LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies dropped their regular season finale to Gannon 12-10 back on Saturday (Apr. 28). Rusen began the scoring with her 35
th of the season assisted by
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) less than four minutes in, before Gannon would score the next two goals within 38 seconds of each other.
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) would tie the game at two with her 13
th of the season unassisted with over 16 minutes to play in the first half, before Gannon would score the final goal of the first half with 12 minutes to play. Gannon led 3-2 at halftime. Gannon would score the first goal of the second half just 1:21 in to go up 4-2. Approaching the five-minute mark of the second half, Rusen scored unassisted to get back within one, before the Golden Knights would score the next three goals to pull away. Dempsey scored her ninth of the season from Wozniak with 16:52 to play in the second half, before Gannon would score just 15 seconds later. After Gannon scored to increase their lead to five, Bloomsburg would score the next four goals over the next eight minutes to get back in the game and leave the score just 9-8 in favor of Gannon. Dempsey scored with just under 14 minutes left assisted by
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), before
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) scored her 28
th of the season just 1:05 later. As the clock entered the final 10 minutes, Turner scored her 13
th of the year unassisted with eight and a half minutes to play. Rusen's hat trick goal came with just under seven minutes to play to get the Huskies within one, before Gannon would score the next three goals over a two-minute span. Bloomsburg scored the final two goals of the game, with Rusen scoring her fourth of the afternoon from Kelleher with 1:21 left and Bergman netting her 15
th of the season unassisted with just 37 seconds left. Gannon held on for the win.
Bloomsburg out-shot Gannon 32-29 in the loss, including 26-21 in shots on goal. Rusen led BU with a game-high four goals, while Dempsey scored twice. Turner, Bergman, Kelleher and Smith also each netted one goal in the game. Four different Huskies tallied assists in the win. BU won the battle for ground balls 30-26, led by five from Diachynsky. DiPasquale picked up four, while three others scooped up three each. Another three Huskies collected two ground balls each, along with six others each registering one. Bloomsburg caused 17 of Gannon's 29 turnovers, with four from Nocito being a team-high. Four other Huskies each caused two turnovers in the win, while another five players each forced one. Bloomsburg also won eight draw controls on the afternoon, with Bergman and Smith each winning two. Four other Huskies pulled down one draw control each. DiPasquale (10-7) took the loss in the cage, making nine saves.
No. 21 Mercyhurst defeated Kutztown 12-9 in their regular season finale back on Saturday (Apr. 28) in PSAC competition. The Lakers scored the first goal just 38 seconds in when Taylor Izzo scored from Kristin Anderson, before Kutztown would tie the game just under eight minutes in. Emma Hubert scored unassisted just 21 second later to give Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead, before Kutztown would score the next two goals to lead 3-2 with under 17 minutes to play in the first half. The Lakers would score the next three goals over a five-minute span, beginning with Anderson scoring unassisted just 42 seconds after KU's goal. Three minutes later, Anderson scored from Izzo to re-gain the lead for the Lakers before Izzo scored from Lacey Netti to put Mercyhurst up 5-3 with 11 minutes to play in the half. Kutztown scored two of the final three goals of the half inside the final 10 minutes, scoring at the 7:27 mark and again with 2:13 to play in the half. The final goal of the half came off the stick of Anderson from Netti to put the Lakers up 6-5 with just 1:26 left in the half. Mercyhurst would carry their lead to the break. Anderson scored the first goal of the second half unassisted just 1:35 in, before Kutztown scored to get back within one less than four minutes in. Angelina Simon scored the next goal for Mercyhurst just over five minutes into the half, before Kutztown scored again just 38 seconds later to get back within one goal. Hubert would score 40 seconds later to put the Lakers up 9-7, before another Kutztown goal came just 54 seconds later. The Lakers would finally distance themselves from Kutztown with three goals over 15 minutes to stretch their lead to 12-8. Torie Sullivan scored unassisted eight minutes into the half, before Izzo scored from Anderson just 34 seconds later. The final Mercyhurst goal of the game came with seven minutes to play when Anderson scored unassisted. Kutztown scored the final goal of the game with four minutes to play in the second.
Mercyhurst out-shot Kutztown 28-24 in the win, including 20-15 in shots on goal. Anderson recorded a game-high five goals in the contest, while Izzo also notched a hat trick in the win. Hubert scored twice, while Simon and Sullivan also contributed one goal each. Anderson and Netti dished out two assists each in the win, while Izzo also tallied one helper. Mercyhurst collected 24 ground balls to Kutztown's 28, led by five from Kira Kolb. Three Lakers each picked up three ground balls, while another five players each registered two. Mercyhurst also caused 15 of Kutztown's 24 turnovers led by four from Anderson, while Kolb and Libby Montanye each forced three. Simon caused two turnovers in the win, while three other Lakers each forced one. The Lakers won the battle for draw controls 15-8, with Anderson and Kolb each recording six and Simon also winning three. Raelyn Tiberio got the win in 58:18 in the cage, making six saves. Rebecca Whitehead played the remaining 1:42 between the pipes.
SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG
The Huskies are seventh in the PSAC in scoring at an average of 12.41 goals per game, while allowing 12.61 goals per game. Rusen's 38 goals lead the team while Gormley (31) is the only other Husky with at least 30 goals on the season. Seven other Huskies have scored at least 10 goals on the season, while another four have scored at least one. Kelleher's 23 assists lead the team and are 10
thin the conference, while five others have helped on at least 10 goals on the season. Kelleher's 51 points (28 G, 23 A) also lead the team while Rusen (43 points, 38 G, five A) is the only other Husky with at least 40 points on the season. 10 others have registered at least 10 points on the season, while three others have each tallied at least one. Bloomsburg is second in the conference in ground balls with 498, led by 72 from goalkeeper DiPasquale which is the third-highest total in the conference. 17 other Huskies have scooped up at least 10 ground balls on the season. Bloomsburg remains the conference leader in caused turnovers with 269, and is one of five teams in the conference with at least 200 caused turnovers on the season. Diachynsky leads the team and is fourth in the conference with 39 caused turnovers, while Nocito is second on the team and eighth in the conference with 33. 10 other Huskies have caused at least 10 turnovers on the season. The Huskies are eighth in the league in draw controls with 208, and one of eight teams with at least 200 on the season. Bergman leads the team on the season with 38, while Turner (35) is the only other Husky with at least 30 draw controls on the year. Five other Huskies have won at least 10 draw controls on the season. DiPasquale has been a mainstay in cage for the Huskies on the season, owning a 12.61 goals against average (GAA) and a .444 save percentage. Her 173 saves are the third-highest total in the PSAC.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
The Lakers are the eighth-best scoring team in the league right behind Bloomsburg, averaging 12.31 goals per game while allowing the fourth-lowest goals per game average in the conference at 10.38. Anderson leads the team and is seventh individually in the conference with 50 goals, while five other Lakers have scored at least 10 goals on the season. Eight others have scored at least once on the year. Izzo's 56 assists lead the team and are third in the conference, while Netti's 27 are second on the team and eighth in the league. 11 other Lakers have assisted on goals on the season. Izzo's 80 points (24 G, 56 A) also lead the team and are the third-highest total in the conference, while Anderson (50 G, 12 A) is the only other Laker with at least 50 points on the season. Five others have at least 10 points on the season for Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst has collected 321 ground balls on the season as a team, led by 45 from Kolb. 11 other Lakers have picked up at least 10 ground balls on the season. The Lakers are sixth in the PSAC in caused turnovers with 192, with Anderson's 35 leading the team and also being tied for sixth individually in the conference.
