CLARION, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team saw its two-match winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon as it suffered a 22-15 setback at Clarion University in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) dual. The Huskies dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-3 against EWL opponents while the Golden Eagles improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league standings.
The dual came down to the heavyweight bout as the Huskies entered the final match of the day trailing by one point, 16-15. Junior
Bruce Graeber (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) was matched up against Clarion's Toby Cahill and, after a scoreless first period, Cahill scored a reversal before Graeber countered with an escape to send the match to the third period with Cahill leading, 2-1. Graeber was inches away from tying the bout at 2-2 with an escape but Cahill was able to hang on and force Graeber to his back to earn the pin just 12 seconds into the final period and secure the victory for the Golden Eagles.
The Huskies started strong as junior
Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) and redshirtÂ
Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each earned decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, to give Bloomsburg a 6-0 advantage. Clarion was able to tie the dual at 6-6 with a fall at 141 pounds before redshirt junior
Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and junior
Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) won the next two matches to regain a six-point lead for the Huskies at 12-6.
In the second half, Clarion won four of the five matches to erase the six-point deficit and turn it into a seven-point victory. Bloomsburg's only win during the stretch came at 184 pounds when redshirt junior
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) posted a 6-0 win over Luke Funck for his 14th win in his last 17 matches. Allard leads the Huskies with an 18-9 overall record on the year. The win gave Bloomsburg a 15-13 lead before Clarion won the final two matches to claim the victory.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Sunday, January 27, when it heads to Cleveland State for a battle against the Vikings. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
