CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team suffered its second consecutive loss on Sunday afternoon after dropping a 27-15 decision at Cleveland State University in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) contest. The Huskies dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the EWL standings while the Vikings improved to 4-7 overall and 1-3 against EWL opponents.
Things started promising for the Huskies as junior
Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) earned an 18-0 technical fall win over Cameron Lathem at 125 pounds to give Bloomsburg a 5-0 advantage. It was Girard's third consecutive victory to move his overall record to 15-8 on the season. The technical fall was his first of the year.
However, the match unraveled for the Huskies as Cleveland State won the next five matches - two via fall - to build up a 21-5 lead.
Bloomsburg responded as redshirt sophomore
Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) pinned Colton Carroll 30 seconds into the second period to cut the Vikings' advantage to 21-11. Vetrano improved to 8-13 overall and earned his third victory by fall on the season. Redshirt junior
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) followed with a 12-3 major decision over Chris Morrow to trim the Cleveland State lead to 21-15. Allard, ranked 28th in the initial NCAA Division I Coaches Panel poll released earlier this week, won his fifth straight match - 15th of his last 18 - and improved to 19-9 overall. It was his team-leading sixth major decision win of the year.
Cleveland State, however, ended any thoughts of a Bloomsburg comeback with victories at 197 and 285 pounds to close out the match.
The Huskies will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, next Saturday, February 2, for matches against Michigan State and Northern Illinois. The match against the Spartans starts at 12:00 p.m. while action against Northern Illinois gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
