LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Redshirt senior
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) kept rolling on Thursday night but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University wrestling team dropped a 26-12 decision at Lock Haven University in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) dual at Thomas Fieldhouse. The Huskies dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the MAC while the Bald Eagles improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
With the night opening at 197 pounds, Allard closed out the dual in tremendous fashion as he posted a 10-8 win over Lock Haven's Corey Hazel, in the second sudden victory period, to improve to 12-1 overall on the season. The Huskies also had victories from redshirt sophomore
Jarrett Walters (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) at 285, freshman
Christian Gannone (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) at 125, and senior
Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) at 165 pounds. But, unfortunately for Bloomsburg, four of Lock Haven's six victories came with bonus points as the Bald Eagles pulled away for the win.
Allard, ranked 15th in the country according to FloWrestling, and Hazel, ranked 13th in the country entering the match, put on a show in the final bout of the evening with much of the action occurring in the third period and in extra time. The match was tied at 1-1 heading to the final stanza before things got wild. Hazel built up a 7-4 lead late before Allard scored a quick escape and then a takedown at the buzzer to send the match to the first sudden-victory period. After a scoreless sudden victory frame, Hazel escaped in the first tiebreaker and looked to ride out for the win in the second tiebreaker but was called for locked hands to tie the match at 8-8. Allard then earned the victory in the second sudden-victory period on a takedown with roughly ten seconds left. With the win, Allard moved to 84-42 in his career and pulled to within 16 victories of reaching the century mark.
Bloomsburg's first win of the night came from Walters who improved to 9-6 on the year as the Huskies' heavyweight. The redshirt sophomore built up a 6-0 lead after the opening period against Trey Hartsock and then scored a pair of escapes over the final two periods. Hartsock prevented Walters from earning a major decision with his only point coming on riding time. It was Walters' first dual win of the season.
Gannone gave Bloomsburg a 6-3 lead with a 7-4 win over Matt Maloney at 125 pounds. The freshman improved to 2-6 on the year and earned his first collegiate dual win with the victory. Gannone led 2-1 after the opening period and was tied 4-4 heading to the third before scoring the final three points of the bout - on an early escape and a late takedown - to post the win.
The other Huskies' win came from Newberry who posted a 4-1 win over Austin Bell at 165 pounds. The senior moved to 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in duals as he jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening period on a late takedown. Bell scored an escape in the second before Newberry countered with an escape in the third. Newberry's final point came via riding time.
Following competition at the 57th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on December 29 and 30, the Huskies will return to dual action on Friday, January 3, when they host Long Island University (LIU) at the Nelson Field House. Action gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
