THE STORY
• The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team looks to open the season with three consecutive wins for the first time this decade when they host Jefferson Friday evening. The Huskies are 2-0 on the young season after home wins over Georgian Court and Wilmington (DE) last week, outscoring their opponents 37-16 in the two victories. The Rams were slated to open the season against Shippensburg Wednesday, but weather has prevented Jefferson from taking the field thus far.
THE HISTORY: BLOOMSBURG vs. JEFFERSON
• The Huskies are 13-2 all-time against Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University), including an 18-8 win over the Rams a season ago.
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had four goals (on just five shots) and an assist in that contest, while
Hannah Jaskuta (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) tallied a goal and four assists. Jefferson will mark the third consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Bloomsburg has faced to start the season after defeating Georgian Court and Wilmington (DE) last week.
THE HUSKIES AT A GLANCE
• Jaskuta,
Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield),
Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and
Taylor Skawinski (Ledgewood, N.J./Morris Catholic) each recorded three goals to power the Huskies to a 20-6 win over visiting Wilmington (DE) Friday night. Six other Bloomsburg players notched at least one goal, as
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) and
Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) poured in two goals apiece, and
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side),
Sydney Collins (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), Bergman, and
Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) each chipped in goals. Freshman goalkeeper
Charlotte Williamson (Phoenixville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) recorded four saves and earned the victory in her first career start.
• Jaskuta has had a tremendous start to the season for Bloomsburg, leading the team in points (11), and goals scored (8). The senior is tied for the team-lead in assists (3) with Kelleher, who is second on the team in points (9) and goals (6). Dempsey has posted four goals and two assists through two games, while Smith has three goals and three assists. Bergman has a team-high 13 draw controls on the year, which ranks fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) did not play in Friday's win over Wilmington, but was tremendous in the Huskies season-opening win over Georgian Court, recording 16 saves in the complete-game victory.
• Bloomsburg's defense has been stifling early in the season, leading the PSAC In caused turnovers (42) and ground balls (64). Sophomore
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) ranks second in the conference in caused turnovers with seven, while 2018 All-PSAC selections
Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) and
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) have caused five and four turnovers, respectively. Diachynsky, Nocito, and junior
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) are all tied for the team-lead in ground balls with six.
• Bloomsburg was picked to finish seventh in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this season after qualifying for the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2015 and the second time in Head Coach
Shannon Hertz's career a season ago. The Huskies will open up conference play on Saturday, March 16, at Mercyhurst, and will host a conference opponent for the first time on March 23 against Millersville.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
• Jefferson was picked to finish second in the CACC in 2019 after posting a record of 9-8 and earning a trip to the CACC Tournament for the 10th consecutive season a year ago. The Rams were tied with Chestnut Hill in the preseason polls, just behind preseason favorite Georgian Court. Bloomsburg defeated the Lions 17-10 to open the season last Tuesday, and were originally scheduled to battle Chestnut Hill this week, but the game has been postponed to March 21.
• Set as the No. 2 seed in the CACC Tournament last season, the Rams received a bye in the first round bye, but were defeated 13-11 by Chestnut Hill in the semifinals. Jefferson led 10-7 late in the second half against the Griffins, but Chestnut Hill would close the game on a 6-1 run dash the Rams championship hopes. Camryn Sullivan had two goals and four assists in the loss, while Sarah Von Lange chipped in two goals.
• The Rams return four All-CACC selections from a season ago in senior Chanel D'Angelo, juniors Von Lange and Erin Eckert, and sophomore Erin Campbell. Von Lange was named to the first team after leading the team in goals with 45. The midfielder added 14 assists for a total of 59 points on the year. D'Angelo was all named to the first team following a tremendous year anchoring the Jefferson Defense. She caused 18 turnovers and scooped up 29 ground balls on the season. Eckert recorded 25 goals, eight assists, and 20 draw controls for the Rams, while Campbell led the team in ground balls with 49.
LOOKING AHEAD
• The Huskies hit the road for the first time this season on March 13 when they take on Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bloomsburg will open conference play on Saturday, March 16, at Mercyhurst. First draw with Queens is set for 3:00 p.m.
