THE STORY
• The Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis teams head south this weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. Bloomsburg opens at Virginia State on Saturday, April 6, before battling Shepherd on Sunday, April 7. The Rams will be joining the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) beginning in the fall of 2019.
THE HUSKIES AT A GLANCE
• The women's team enters the weekend with an 8-2 overall record but is coming off of a 6-1 loss at West Chester on Thursday afternoon in a conference matchup. Junior
Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) posted the only Huskies' win against the Golden Rams as she improved to 7-2 overall in singles play and extended her winning streak to three consecutive matches.
• Senior
Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) leads Bloomsburg with a 9-3 mark in singles action this season while junior
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) is right behind with an 8-5 mark on the year. Nery, sophomore
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino), and junior
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) have each contributed seven singles wins on the year. In doubles, Calimer and Nery have teamed for an 8-4 record while Bonito and Capoferri have gone 8-5 overall. Senior
Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) has six wins in doubles action this season as she has partnered with both Wentz and sophomore
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo).
• On the men's side, the Huskies are coming off of their first PSAC win of the season with a 7-0 blanking at West Chester on Thursday afternoon. Bloomsburg is 3-4 overall and 1-1 against league opponents.
• A quartet of Huskies lead the way with five singles wins on the season - sophomores
Guille Carranza (Sevilla, Spain/Escolapios),
Lucas Pedrotti (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Sao Jose),
Benjamin Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area), and
Nagid Walle (Willemstad, Curacao/Saint Andrews (Fla.)). Sophomore
Bernardo Abreu (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Rogedo) and freshman
Oliver Wiesemann (Jena, Germany/Colegio de La Asuncion Malaga) have each collected four singles wins on the year. Abreu and Pedrotti have been excellent at #1 doubles as they have teamed up for a 9-2 overall record - 6-1 in duals. Carranza and Walle have paired up for five doubles victories.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA STATE
• The men's team enters the weekend with a 1-3-1 record on the year and the Trojans have not played since playing to a 3-3 tie against District of Columbia on March 30. Virginia State's only win of the year came on March 17 against Concord.
• The women's squad has gone 7-2 overall and has a 6-1 mark in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Trojans started the year with four consecutive wins but have since gone 3-2 over their last five matches. Sydney Yao leads the team with a perfect 8-0 record at #1 singles. Kaela Mack is right behind with a 7-1 overall mark while Deja Lovitt, Zimaris Smith, Felicia Tucker, and Christina Washington each posting six singles wins. In doubles, Tucker and Washington are a perfect 7-0 at #2 doubles while Mack and Yao have gone 7-1 at #1.
SCOUTING SHEPHERD
• The men's team comes in with a 1-7 record on the year with its only victory at Shenandoah on March 29. Since the victory, the Rams have dropped two straight - 6-1 at West Virginia Wesleyan and 7-0 at West Liberty on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. It will mark the first home match of the season for Shepherd.
• The women are 2-6 on the year and have dropped three straight - all by the scores of 7-0. Shepherd's victories have come at Shenandoah on March 2 and against Albany State, in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on March 14. This will also be the first home match of the year for the Rams' women.
LOOKING AHEAD
• The Huskies will have a busy week of conference action next week with all matches being held at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. On Wednesday, April 10, the women will take the court against East Stroudsburg followed by a men's contest against Edinboro on Friday, April 12. On Saturday, April 13, the women will play Shippensburg while the men will square off Mercyhurst.
