BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team saw its two-match winning streak come to an end on Thursday night as the Huskies dropped a 19-16 decision to visiting Edinboro University at the Nelson Field House. Bloomsburg fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while the Fighting Scots improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the MAC standings.

The evening went back-and-forth with the Huskies holding a 16-13 advantage following redshirt senior Trevor Allard's (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) 5-2 decision over Edinboro's Cody Mulligan at 184 pounds. However, the Fighting Scots battled back to win the final two matches to escape with the three-point victory.

The night started with an exciting bout at 125 pounds featuring Bloomsburg freshman Christian Gannone (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and Edinboro redshirt sophomore Lucas Rodriguez. Rodriguez jumped out to an 8-2 advantage after the opening period but Gannone countered with a reversal and a penalty point in the second period to cut the deficit to 8-5. Rodriguez scored an early escape in the third to push the margin to 9-5 before Gannone scored a takedown to trim the lead to 9-7. However, that would be as close as Gannone would get as the Fighting Scots took a 3-0 lead.

Redshirt freshman Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) took the mat next for the Huskies and was able to score a takedown midway through the first period against Edinboro's Tye Varndell to take a 2-0 lead. Mason was able to turn Varndell onto his back following the takedown and converted it into his team-leading seventh fall of the season to give the Huskies a 6-3 advantage. Mason improved to 11-5 overall with the victory.

Following an Edinboro victory at 141 pounds to tie the match at 6-6, sophomore Aaron Coleman (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) earned an impressive 4-1 decision over Tyler Vath at 149 pounds to give the Huskies their three-point lead back at 9-6. Trailing 1-0 heading to the third, Coleman scored all four points in the third period to improve to 7-5 on the year.

Sophomore Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) built off of the momentum and took care of Edinboro's Peter Pappas by scoring a 12-4 major decision at 157 pounds to extend the Huskies' lead to 13-6. Carida led 5-1 through two periods and then scored three takedowns - and a riding-time point - to earn his fourth major decision win of the year. He improved to 10-7 on the season.

The Fighting Scots, however, would not go away as they bounced back with a decision at 165 pounds and a major decision at 174 pounds to square the dual at 13-13 heading to the 184-pound bout.

Allard, ranked 13th in the country according to the latest InterMat poll, took the mat against Mulligan and scored a takedown midway through the first to take a 2-0 lead. Mulligan countered with an escape which left Allard with a 2-1 lead after the opening period. Mulligan scored another escape to tie the match at 2-2 heading to the third but Allard chose bottom and escaped quickly in the third to retake a 3-2 advantage. It remained 3-2 until just before the buzzer when Allard scored a takedown for a 5-2 final. The redshirt senior improved to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in duals this season.

However, Edinboro's Dylan Reynolds tied the dual at 16-16 when he edged senior Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) at 197 pounds by a 3-2 final. Redshirt sophomore Jarrett Walters (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) fought hard against Edinboro's heavyweight Jon Spaulding in the final bout of the night but Spaulding proved to be too much as he defeated Walters 14-7 to give Edinboro the victory. Spaulding, ranked second in the MAC poll, moved to 16-5 on the year with the clinching victory.

Bloomsburg will look to bounce back and will look to secure the program's first MAC victory when it entertains Clarion University at the Nelson Field House on Sunday, January 19. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
