BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team won five matches on Sunday afternoon but fell a point short as the Huskies dropped a 16-15 decision against visiting Clarion University at the Nelson Field House in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) dual. Bloomsburg saw its record drop to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the MAC standings while the Golden Eagles improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 against MAC foes.
Nine of the ten matches on the afternoon were by decision with the difference in the dual coming in the 149-pound bout where Clarion's Brock Zacherl, ranked tenth in the country at the weight class, defeated sophomore
Aaron Coleman (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) by a 14-5 major decision.
The Huskies held a 15-10 lead heading to the final two matches of the day, but the Golden Eagles earned victories at 197 and at 285 to escape with the win. Senior
Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) gave everything 16th-ranked Greg Bulsak could handle in the 197-pound match but ultimately fell by a 4-2 final as the Golden Eagles pulled to within two points at 15-13. Then, in the heavyweight bout, Clarion's Ty Bagoly blanked redshirt sophomore
Jarrett Walters (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), 6-0, to complete the comeback.
After Clarion's Cameron Butler edged freshman
Christian Gannone (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), 6-5, in the 125-pound bout, redshirt freshman
Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) evened the score at 3-3 with a high-scoring 15-11 decision over Clarion's Seth Koleno at 133 pounds. Mason led 7-4 after the opening period and kept a slim 9-8 advantage heading to the third. Mason chose top to start the third and scored four quick back points to push the margin to 13-8. Koleno countered with an escape and then a takedown to cut Mason's lead to 13-11, but Mason scored an escape and then added the riding-time point for the four-point win.
Mason improved to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in duals this season.
Freshman
Marlon Argueta-Diaz (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) took the mat at 141 pounds and collected the first dual win of his collegiate career with a 3-0 win over Clarion's Alex Blake. Argueta-Diaz scored all three of his points in the second period as he improved to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in duals.
Zacherl gave Clarion a 7-6 lead with his major decision win at 149 pounds, but the Huskies scored back-to-back last-second wins at 157 and 165 to take a 12-7 advantage. At 157, sophomore
Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) broke a 2-2 tie with a takedown in the final ten seconds to score a 4-2 win over Avery Shay. Then senior
Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) identically followed suit at 165 pounds to earn a 4-2 victory over Mike Bartolo. Both Carida and Newberry improved to 11-7 overall on the year.
At 174 pounds, senior
Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) was matched up with Clarion's Max Wohlabaugh, which proved to be a pivotal bout during the afternoon. After a scoreless first period, Wohlabaugh tallied an escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead entering the third. Vetrano chose bottom to start the third and scored a reversal with a penalty point for locked hands to take a 3-1 lead. However, reversed in the closing seconds to tie the match at 3-3 and to force overtime. Wohlabaugh then scored a takedown early in the overtime period for the 5-3 in to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 12-10.
Redshirt senior
Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), ranked 13th in the country, extended the Huskies' lead to 15-10 at 184 pounds when he blanked Luke Funck by a 5-0 final. Allard moved to 16-1 overall and 7-0 in duals this season, and he moved to within 12 victories of becoming the 19th grappler in program history to record 100 career wins.
The Huskies will have a little time off from competition before they head to Ohio University on Sunday, February 2, still searching for the first MAC victory in program history. Action against the Bobcats is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
