DAY ONE BRACKETS

DeKALB, Ill. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team concluded day one of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships on Saturday and will have four grapplers competing on Sunday for qualifying spots into the NCAA Division I National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, later this month. In the overall team standings, the Huskies are 14th with 27 team points after day one.

Redshirt senior Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), sophomore Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), redshirt freshman Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain), and freshman Christian Gannone (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) are still alive in their respective weight brackets and will be competing again on Sunday. All four suffered one loss on Saturday but took different paths in advancing to Sunday's action.

Allard won his first two matches of the day to advance to the championship semifinals but suffered a loss in the semis to get bumped to the consolation bracket. Allard will need to win two matches on Sunday to secure third place at 184 pounds and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament. Gannone is also fighting for the third and final qualification place at 125 pounds. He lost his first match on Saturday but won the next two in convincing fashion. Mason, fighting for one of five spots at 133 pounds, won his first match but lost in the quarterfinals to get bumped to the consolation bracket. He won his first consolation match on Saturday to stay alive. Finally, Carida, battling for one of six spots at 157 pounds, lost his first match to get bumped to the consolation bracket. He had a bye in the first round of wrestlebacks and then won his next match to move on.

Allard opened the tournament as the top seed at 184 pounds and squared off against Cleveland State's DeAndre Nassar in the opening round. Allard scored a takedown just before the final buzzer to force overtime and then needed a second tiebreaker to knock off Nassar, 8-6, to advance to the quarterfinals. Allard then defeated Edinboro's Cody Mulligan, 6-1, in the quarters but fell to Northern Illinois's Brit Wilson, 8-5, in the semifinals to get bumped to the consolation bracket. Allard fell behind early, cut the deficit late, but ran out of time to build off of a third-period takedown against Wilson. Allard, 23-3 on the season, will await the winner of Nassar and Old Dominion's Antonio Agee for his first match on Sunday.

Mason, seeded fifth at 133 pounds, picked up his team-leading tenth fall of the season in his opening match on Saturday as he pinned George Mason's Josh Jones with two seconds left in the first period. However, Mason dropped an 11-3 major decision setback to Lock Haven's DJ Fehlman before bouncing back with a 4-0 win over Northern Illinois' Caleb Brooks to stay alive to compete on Sunday. Mason, 18-8 on the year, will open day two against Cleveland State's Justin Patrick. The two met twice during the regular season with Mason winning both matches - a fall at the Clarion Open on November 3 and an 8-2 decision in the Bloomsburg-Cleveland State dual on February 14.

Gannone started inauspiciously as he was pinned by fifth-seeded Bryce West of Northern Illinois to open his day. However, Gannone seemed to be fueled by the loss as he earned a 13-2 major decision win over SIU-Edwardsville's Gage Datlovsky in his opening match of the consolation bracket and then pinned Clarion's Jake Gromacki in just 32 seconds to remain alive in the tournament. The freshman is 13-13 overall on the year and will begin his second day of action against Lock Haven's Luke Werner who entered as the second seed at 125 pounds. Gannone and Werner have never met on the mat.

Finally, Carida was given a tough draw as he opened against top-seeded Jesse Dellavecchia of Rider at 157 pounds. Carida battled but ultimately dropped a 3-0 decision to fall to the consolation bracket. After a bye in the first round of the consolations, Carida finally took the mat again against Lock Haven's Alex Klucker and earned a 5-2 victory to advance in the tournament. The Huskies' sophomore had lost twice to Klucker in their two meetings during the regular season. Carida is 15-11 on the year and will begin his Sunday action against Central Michigan's Logan Parks. Carida and Parks have never met.

Senior Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) upset Old Dominion's Shane Jones by an 8-4 decision in the opening round at 165 pounds to advance to the quarterfinal round. However, Newberry was pinned by George Mason's Neil Schuster late in the first period and then suffered a 4-2 loss to Cleveland State's Riley Smucker in the consolation bracket to end his run in the tournament. Newberry finished his season with a 13-14 overall record and totaled 39 career wins with the Huskies.

Senior Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was the other grappler to earn a victory on Saturday but, like Newberry, was bounced from the tournament after suffering a pair of losses. Murphy fell to Clarion's Greg Bulsak in the opening round but stayed alive with a 5-3 win over Parker McClellan of Lock Haven in his first consolation match. The senior, however, dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Edinboro's Dylan Reynolds to end his run. Murphy finished the year with a 12-15 record and ended his collegiate career with 52 victories.

The Huskies had four other wrestlers compete on Saturday - junior Shawn Orem (Pasadena, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) at 141 pounds, sophomore Aaron Coleman (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) at 149 pounds, senior Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) at 174 pounds, and redshirt sophomore Jarrett Walters (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) at 285 pounds - but went 0-2 in the tournament. Vetrano completed his collegiate career with 18 wins.

Action on day two gets underway at 12:00 p.m. CST from the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.
