COMPLETE PSAC RELEASE
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - As announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon, senior
Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) of the Bloomsburg University women's swimming team has been named to the 2019-20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Winter Top 10 Team as chosen by the league's sports information directors. The PSAC Top 10 Awards are designed to recognize ten student-athletes (five females and five males) each season who excel in both the classroom and in athletic competition.
Cubbler is the second student-athlete from Bloomsburg to earn a Top 10 honor this season as she joins Carter Luckenbaugh from men's soccer who claimed the honor during the fall season. Cubbler, who also received the accolade last season, is the first Huskies' women's swimmer, since the inception of the award, to garner the accolade. She is the first female student-athlete at Bloomsburg to win in back-to-back years since Amber Hackenberg from women's cross country and track and field accomplished the feat in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.
Initiated in the 1997-98 academic year, the PSAC Top 10 Award is given to five males and five females in each athletic season; fall, winter, and spring. To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials for their respective team. The winter sports eligible for consideration for the Winter Top 10 Awards are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's swimming, and wrestling.
Cubbler wrapped up a sensational four-year career with the Huskies by earning three All-American honors at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The senior placed tenth in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:02.63 in the only event she was able to compete in at the championships. However, based on adjusted criteria announced recently, Cubbler earned two more All-American nods in the events she was also invited to participate in, finishing 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.82) and 16th in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:00.21). Before the NCAAs, Cubbler won her first career individual title at the conference championships after finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.14)
Also, at this year's conference championships, Cubbler was a six-time All-PSAC honoree after winning the 200-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle, and 1650-yard freestyle. She also was a part of the 800-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay teams that finished third at the conference meet.
Cubbler will graduate as one of the top swimmers in program history. She wraps up her brilliant career as a six-time All-American, an 18-time All-PSAC honoree, a two-time PSAC Champion, and competed at the NCAA Division II National Championships in each of her four seasons. She also owns six school records - the 200-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, the 1000-yard freestyle, the 400-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Out of the pool, Cubbler is a three-time D2 ADA Scholar-Athlete, a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, a three-time NCAA Academic All-American, and earned CoSIDA At-Large Academic All-America® First Team honors last season.
Cubbler, who majors in early childhood education and special education, currently has a 3.90 cumulative GPA.
Joining Cubbler on the PSAC Winter Top 10 Team were Michaela Barnes (Edinboro - women's basketball), Brent Benedict (Gannon - men's swimming), Ralph Casper (West Chester - men's track and field), Nathan Davis (Seton Hill - men's basketball), Jason Goodman (Slippery Rock - men's track and field), John Paul Kromka (Pitt-Johnstown - men's basketball), Tiffany Lapotsky (East Stroudsburg - women's basketball), Paige Mikesell (IUP - women's swimming), and Stefanie Parsons (Edinboro - track and field).
After the academic year, all Top 10 Award winners from each season are eligible for the PSAC Pete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, given to one male and one female candidate.
