BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team wrapped up its abbreviated dual schedule with a 28-10 setback at Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe University at Buffalo on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies conclude the season with an 0-2 record in duals while the Bulls finished the year with a 4-3 mark.
Earlier in the afternoon, junior
Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) was ranked 32nd in the country at 157 pounds according to the initial NCAA Coaches' Rankings. He was the only Bloomsburg grappler ranked in the top 33 in the country in any of the ten weight classes. Carida and redshirt freshman
Cole Rhone (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) each won a pair of matches on Thursday to pace the Huskies.
Rhone, a 133-pound transfer from Virginia Tech, got Bloomsburg on the board during the dual by edging Buffalo's Caleb Svingala, 2-1, for his first collegiate victory. He went on to wrestle again in extra matches and pinned Tommy Maddox in overtime for his second win of the afternoon. Carida, who went 2-2 last weekend in a tri-meet against Hofstra and Drexel, improved to 4-2 on the year with a pair of decisions on Thursday. The junior defeated Michael Petite, 3-1, during the dual and then posted a 3-0 win over Hunter Shaut during the extra matches.
Redshirt freshman
Tanner Culver (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) earned Bloomsburg's only other victory during the dual as he earned a 13-4 major decision over Jake Lanning at 174 pounds. It was Culver's second win of the year.
In the extra matches, redshirt sophomore
Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) and freshman
Antoine Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) each posted wins. Mason won in sudden victory, 5-3, over Matt Ryan after dropping a hard-fought 7-5 decision to Ryan during the dual. Mason moved to 3-1 on the year. Allen, meanwhile, won by major decision - 11-2 - over Jimmy Ryan. The 133-pound freshman improved to 2-2 on the season.
Also announced by the NCAA on Thursday afternoon were the pre-allocations for the NCAA Division I tournament. The MAC received 25 pre-allocations in addition to the 10 automatic qualifiers for each weight-class champion. The pre-allocations were based on the five-year average (2016-20) of pre-allocations earned by the conference in each weight class. In previous years, pre-allocations have been determined by a formula measuring Division I winning percentage, RPI and the coaches' ranking. A decrease in matches, in particular non-conference matches, due to the COVID-19 pandemic led the Division I Wrestling Committee to transition to the five-year average for 2021.
A total of 266 spots – 196 pre-allocations and 70 automatic qualifiers were announced Thursday. At the conclusion of the conference tournaments, the committee will meet to select the remaining at-large qualifiers to fill a 33-man bracket in each weight class.
Next up for the Huskies will be the MAC Championships at the Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey, on Friday, February 26, and Saturday, February 27. Rider University will serve as the host for this year's tournament.
