Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – The Bloomsburg field hockey team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a dominant 4-2 win over Franklin Pierce, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies handed the Ravens their first loss of the year to drop FPU to 1-1.
Â
The Huskies controlled the pace of play for the entire 60 minutes as Bloomsburg out-shot Franklin Pierce 23-7, including a 6-0 advantage in the third quarter alone. Bloomsburg held a 17-4 advantage in penalty corners, giving up two in the first and fourth quarters.
Â
The Ravens took advantage of one of their two penalty corners early in the first quarter as Anna Beck gave FPU a 1-0 lead just 3:37 into action off a pass from Lexie Frank. The Huskies moved the ball down field and kept it in the offensive zone after that and earned a corner at the 9:43 mark.
Jessica Serafin (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) inserted the ball into
Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) who pushed it to her left to
Sam Schaffer (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) for the long goal and to tie the game 1-1 at the 9:51 mark. Bloomsburg got another penalty corner and put two more shots on goal before taking a 2-1 lead thanks to
Genna Bush's (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) first career goal at Bloomsburg. Bush controlled the ball as it rattled around the defense and slipped it passed the Raven goalie for the Bloomsburg lead.
The Huskies open the second quarter with three-straight shots in the first two and half minutes but couldn't find the back of the cage thanks to a pair of saves by Zoe Noorlag. Franklin Pierce had its first shot of the quarter midway through the period, but
Jackie Nevel (Nescopeck, Pa./Berwick Area) stepped up for the save and kept the lead for Bloomsburg. With 3:31 to play before half, Serafin gave the Huskies an insurance goal with her first of the year off another Bloomsburg penalty corner. The Huskies had one more shot in the final 15 seconds but couldn't convert on their corner and settled for the 3-1 lead at halftime.
Â
Bloomsburg came out of the break firing as
Olivia Shoemaker (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) put on a shot on cage just 13 seconds in to the period but was turned away by Noorlag. The Huskies kept the ball in front of the Ravens' cage and eventually took the 4-1 lead after
Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) had the final tip on a shot headed toward the goal from
Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area).
Â
Franklin Pierce earned a corner with less than four minutes to play in regulation and cut the lead in half with Aria Caputo's first goal of the year but their final attempt on goal with four seconds left was stopped by Nevel and the Huskies walked away with the 4-2 win.
Â
Culp led the Huskies with four shots while McFarland and Shoemaker each had three. Nevel made four saves for the Huskies after playing all 60 minutes to earn her second win.
Â
Bloomsburg continues its road trip to open the season on Sunday when the Huskies visit Mercy on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. showdown in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
