Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg women's tennis narrowly missed pulling off a comeback effort in a 3-4 defeat to Chestnut Hill at the Burt Reese Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
"The women were neck and neck the entire match and came up just short on a couple of match tiebreakers," remarked head coach
Rebecca Helt following Friday's action. The Huskies fall to 3-1 in fall action, as the Griffins improve to 9-2 in fall play.
Entering the match, Chestnut Hill won its previous six dual matches and remained hot by taking the doubles point with wins on Courts No. 1 and No. 3. The tandem of
Dasha Nakonechna (Spain/IOC) and
Lia-Sophie Seele (Mülheim, NRW, Germany/Luisenschule) finished out their contest on Court No. 2 with a 6-3 victory over Meirovich and Rasilla from the Griffins.Â
In singles competition, Bloomsburg captured the first three singles points with victories on Courts No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6. Freshman
Lily Sierka () was the first to come out on top on Court No. 6, winning in straight sets of Chestnut Hill's Reddy, 6-1, 6-1.Â
Nakonechna carried over her strong form into singles play with her own straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-4, in No. 4 singles.
Nicole Ilkovic (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy High School) stepped into No. 2 singles play and procured a win to put her team up 3-1. After narrowly capturing the first set, Ilkovic rolled in the second set, finishing her day with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
The Griffins fought until the very end, beginning by forcing a tie with wins on Courts No. 1 and No. 5. The attention of the match turned to the most highly competitive pairing of the day on Court No. 3. After securing a tiebreaker to win set two to force a final tiebreaker for the match,
Jen McDonald (Melbourne, Australia/Brentwood Secondary College) could not hold off Meirovich in a highly competitive contest, 5-7, 7-6(6), 7-10.
