BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg wrestling team battled through a tough nationally-ranked opponent but fell 41-0 to the University of Virginia on Saturday evening. The Huskies pushed several bouts deep into the third period and generated long stretches of riding time, but the Cavaliers capitalized on early takedowns and bonus-point victories to secure the non-conference win.
Â
Bloomsburg opened the night at 125 pounds, where freshman
Jace Schafer (Fairport, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) kept the match tight into the late stages before dropping a 7-3 decision. Schafer generated escapes in both the second and third periods and fought off several scoring attempts but could not overcome an early takedown by Virginia's Keyveon Roller.
Â
At 133,
Kade Kluce (Dundee, Mich./Dundee) faced a high-pressure pace from Kyle Montaperto, who used two near-fall sequences to pull away in an 18-0 technical fall at 5:25. The Huskies regrouped defensively at 141, but
Tristan Corbin (Bear Creek, Pa./Robinson) was caught in a sudden transition early in the first period, and Gable Porter secured a fall in 2:14.
Â
Virginia added another pin at 149 as
Dustin Elliott (Delmar, Del./Sussex Tech) wrestled aggressively through the opening exchanges before Wynton Denkins locked in a decisive cradle at 2:17. The Huskies' strongest mid-match push came at 157 pounds, where
William Morrow (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) delivered a gritty performance in an 8-ds2 loss to Colton Washleski. Morrow fought off multiple scoring attempts in the first period, generated a key escape in the second, and stayed within striking distance deep into the third before Washleski sealed the decision with a late takedown.
Â
At 165,
Braidon Woodward (Canisto-Greenwood, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) produced one of the tightest bouts of the night, going point-for-point with Michael Murphy before dropping a narrow 5-3 decision. Woodward used a strong second-period escape and kept Murphy off-balance through multiple scrambles, but a late takedown proved to be the difference.
Â
The upper weights featured several determined Husky efforts. At 174,
Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) wrestled through a high-scoring battle but fell 12-7 to Nick Hamilton. Alderfer earned escapes in all three periods and pushed the pace, but Hamilton capitalized on timely third-period takedowns.
Â
At 184,
Ethan Ducca (Chardon, Ohio/St. John's) kept the match within one score through two periods before Virginia's Griffin Gammell edged out a 10-6 decision.
Coy Raines (North Chille, N.Y./Churchville-Chille) followed with another competitive effort at 197, battling defensively in a tough style matchup before dropping an 8-1 decision to Steven Burrell Jr.
Â
The dual concluded at heavyweight, where
Mason Rebuck (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) was aggressive early but was turned and pinned by Ryan Catka at 3:15.
