BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg wrestling team hosted Navy on Thursday night at Nelson Field House, dropping a 31-10 decision in a dual that featured multiple tightly contested, position-driven bouts throughout the lineup.
At 125 pounds,
Jace Schafer (Fairport, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Nick Treaster wrestled a scoreless opening stretch before Treaster struck first with a reversal midway through the second period. Schafer worked to clear hands and create space from bottom in the second, but Treaster maintained control and added riding time. Schafer continued to press the action in the third period, but Treaster defended cleanly down the stretch and earned his only take down of the day to secure a 5-0 decision.
Bloomsburg earned its first points of the night at 133 pounds as
Gavin Mundy (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) controlled the bout against Hunter Heflin from the opening whistle. Mundy scored an early takedown and added near-fall points in the first period, then extended the lead with another four-count near fall after starting the period on top. Heflin earned a penalty point, an escape and a takedown to 11-5 after the first two periods. Mundy gave up another point with his third stall warning before an escape and takedown to go with
At 141 pounds,
Richie Woods (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Nicholas Vafiadis battled through a competitive first period marked by multiple neutral exchanges. Woods worked to limit bottom exposure in the second, but Vafiadis capitalized late in the match, turning a scramble into a fall at 6:21.
Dustin Elliott (Delmar, Del./Sussex Tech) and Frank Antonelli met in one of the closest bouts of the dual at 149 pounds. Antonelli scored the opening takedown in the first period, while Elliott responded with escapes and counter defense to keep the score tight. The second period remained controlled with short mat exchanges before Antonelli added a late takedown in the third to hold on for a 6-3 decision.
At 157 pounds,
Bubba Ashley (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) faced Cooper Rathburn in a match that featured extended neutral wrestling in the opening period. Rathburn broke through with multiple takedowns across the second and third periods, using pressure and re-attacks to pull away for a 15-2 major decision.
Braidon Woodward (Canisto-Greenwood, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) kept the match competitive at 165 pounds against Dylan Elmore. After a measured opening period, Elmore scored off repeated setups and finishes from neutral in the middle frame. Woodward continued to work for escapes and short offense, but Elmore controlled the pace late to earn a 14-3 major decision.
Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) delivered a key result for the Huskies at 174 pounds in a one-score bout against Davis Park. Alderfer scored the first point of the match with an escape in the second period before Park received a stall warning. Park chose bottom to start the third period and quickly earned an escape to tie the bout at 1-1. The Midshipmen was penalized with another stall warning that gave Alderfer his second point of the match and a 2-1 lead. Park threatened late in the third, but Alderfer defended cleanly to secure a 2-1 decision.
At 184 pounds,
Gavin Hannah (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) faced Daniel Williams. Williams opened the match with quick offense, scoring takedowns and near-fall points in the first period before extending the margin in the second. The bout ended with a 16-0 technical fall at 2:22.
Wyatt Bush (Grundy, Va./Grundy) competed at 197 pounds against Payton Thomas. Thomas converted an early takedown and transitioned immediately into a pinning combination, finishing the bout with a fall at 1:11.
The dual concluded at heavyweight, where
Tyler McCatharn (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) closed the night with a controlled performance against Dominic Iaquinto. After a scoreless first and second period, McCatharn scored the decisive point with an escape in the third. He earned the riding time point after a full two minutes of ride time thanks to dominant second period.
