BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg wrestling team picked up bonus-point victories at 125 and 133 pounds, but Bucknell claimed eight of 10 bouts to secure a 34-9 decision on Sunday evening.
Jace Schafer (Fairport, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) set the tone for the Huskies at 125, earning a 14-6 major decision over Kade Davidheiser. Schafer built his lead with a first-period take down and added multiple take downs in the second and third periods, consistently finishing cleanly on his shots. He controlled ties in neutral and added riding time to stretch the margin to major-decision territory, giving Bloomsburg an early 4-0 team advantage.
At 133,
Austin Pollard (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) delivered the most dominant performance of the dual, rolling to a 29-14 technical fall in 5:42 over Bryce Manera. Pollard piled up points from every position, turning take downs directly into near-fall sequences. After falling behind 9-1 after the first period, Pollard flipped the match on its head. Starting from neutral in the second, Pollard got a take down and four back points to cut the lead to 9-8 before an escape for Bryce Manera got the two back to neutral. Another take down by Pollard gave him the lead, 11-10, before he starting building his bonus point win with back-to-back four-count near falls. Manera was hit with his third stall warning to give Pollard another point and he led 20-12 going into the final period. Pollard got three more take downs while surrendering two escapes to get his tech fall at 29-14 with l:18 left in regulation to give Bloomsburg a 9-0 lead.
Bucknell answered at 141, where
Gavin Mundy (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) was pinned at 1:57, and carried momentum through the middle weights.
At 157,
William Morrow (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) battled in a tight 5-1 decision. Morrow kept the match within reach through two periods, fighting off leg attacks and keeping hand control from bottom. A late takedown created separation, but Morrow limited additional scoring and forced the match to the final whistle.
Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) put together one of the more competitive efforts of the afternoon at 174 in an 18-6 major decision. Alderfer stayed active offensively, trading early take downs and working from bottom to avoid extended riding time. A series of re-attacks and a late take down widened the gap, but Alderfer continued to press the pace through the final period.
At 184,
Braidon Woodward (Canisto-Greenwood, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) dropped a narrow 4-1 decision. The bout remained scoreless through much of the opening period before a take down broke the tie. Woodward answered with an escape and defended multiple shots in the third, keeping it a one-score match into the closing seconds before riding time made the difference.
Coy Raines (North Chille, N.Y./Churchville-Chille) also found himself in a competitive bout at 197, falling 10-3. Raines struck first with early offense and kept the match close into the second period, but a scramble led to a takedown and late points secured the decision.
Bucknell added technical falls at 149, 165 and 285 to widen the final margin as the Bison closed the dual with a 34-9 team score.
