LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Bloomsburg wrestling team faced a challenging road test Saturday afternoon, falling 42-0 to Rider, but the Huskies showed resilience throughout the lineup with several bouts remaining competitive deep into the match.
Bloomsburg opened the dual with a gritty performance at 125 pounds as
Jace Schafer (Fairport, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) battled Tyler Klinsky in a match that featured multiple momentum shifts. Klinsky struck first with a takedown in the opening period and added riding time to build an early advantage. Schafer regrouped in the third, earning an escape and continuing to hand-fight from neutral while limiting Klinsky's offensive opportunities. Schafer forced several scrambles in the third period, but Klinsky maintained control down the stretch to secure the 8-1 decision.
At 157 pounds,
William Morrow (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) delivered one of the most competitive bouts of the night in a match that went to sudden victory. Morrow and Gianni Maldonado battled through a scoreless first period marked by strong positional defense.
Each wrestler earned an escape in the second period, and Morrow matched Maldonado's third-period escape to force overtime. In sudden victory, Maldonado finished a takedown late in the extra session to claim a narrow 4-1 decision.
The heavyweight bout at 285 pounds closed the night with another close contest for Bloomsburg.
Mason Rebuck (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) kept the match tight from the opening whistle with a defensive first period before Swenski earned an escape and takedown in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Swenski's late offense proved to be the difference as he earned a 7-3 decision.
Bloomsburg also saw competitive efforts from
Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian) at 174 pounds and
Gavin Hannah (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) at 184, as both Huskies kept their bouts within reach through the early stages before Rider was able to create separation later in the match.
