BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Bloomsburg wrestling program proudly congratulates alumnus Joe Dougherty '82 on receiving the prestigious Harry E. Lake Award from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Established in 1962 by the NJSIAA, the Harry E. Lake Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to scholastic wrestling in New Jersey. Presented annually during the New Jersey State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City, the honor is considered one of the most prestigious recognitions in the sport.
Dougherty's selection reflects a lifetime dedicated to wrestling as an athlete, coach, and leader.
A standout at Madison Township High School (now Old Bridge), Dougherty was a three-time NJSIAA state qualifier, winning the 108-pound state championship in 1975 and placing third at 115 pounds in 1976. He went on to wrestle at the collegiate level at Bloomsburg State University, where he competed for three seasons before graduating in 1982.
Dougherty later built one of New Jersey's most respected scholastic coaching careers. During 26 seasons as head coach at South Brunswick High School, he compiled a 306-182-3 record while guiding the Vikings to multiple conference and district championships and helping develop numerous individual champions.
Beyond the mat, Dougherty has played a significant role in growing wrestling throughout the state. He served as Region 5 President and Vice President, held multiple leadership positions within the Greater Middlesex Conference, and spent nearly three decades helping organize the Old Bridge Wrestling Festival and youth wrestling camps.
Even in retirement, Dougherty continues to mentor young wrestlers and remains involved in the sport at the middle school level.
A member of multiple halls of fame, Dougherty's impact on wrestling in New Jersey spans generations. His recognition with the Harry Lake Award stands as a fitting tribute to a career devoted to developing wrestlers and advancing the sport.
The Bloomsburg wrestling family proudly congratulates Dougherty on this well-deserved honor and celebrates the lasting legacy of another outstanding Husky.
