SHIPPENSBURG-Senior forward
Adon El (Philadelphia/St. John Neumann) (Philadelphia, St. John Neumann) posted his first double-double of the season to lead Bloomsburg University to a 59-44 win over Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East men's basketball action on Wednesday night. The win snapped the Huskies six-game losing streak.
It was a low scoring first half as neither team shot well from the floor. The Huskies jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before Shippensburg scored the next four points, going up by one with 14:39 left. Bloomsburg would then go on an 8-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 14-9 lead. El scored six of the Huskies points during the stretch. The Red Raiders battled back, knotting up the score at 19 apiece heading into the locker room.
The Huskies (7-10, 1-3) would quickly go up 27-21 just 1:39 into the second half before Shippensburg's 12-5 run put them ahead 33-32 just six minutes later. The Red Raiders lead didn't last long as freshman guard Jamar Smack's (State College, State College) layup on the next possession flipped the lead back to the Huskies. Shippensburg hung around, but a three-pointer by senior guard Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) and a layup by El 47 seconds later gave the Huskies a seven-point lead with 6:26 remaining before outscoring the Red Raiders 14-7 down the stretch to gain their first PSAC East win of the season.
El scored 16 points, going 6-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line, collected 10 rebounds and had three blocks. Britt had a game-high 17 points and sophomore forward Larry Webster (Elkton, MD, Elkton) collected 10 boards of his own.
The Huskies are back in action this Saturday when they host Kutztown. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
