Box Score
JOHNSTOWN—Despite a game-high 19 points from
Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III (Elkton, MD, Elkton), the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team (3-5) dropped a nail-biter, 70-68, to the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (6-2) on the road on Saturday.
The Huskies led for nearly 15 minutes of play in the first half, but the Mountain Cats kept the lead small, never letting Bloomsburg accrue more than a six-point advantage. Webster scored 10 of his points in the opening period, shooting 4 for 6 with two free throws; the junior would also go on to lead the team with six rebounds and three steals. UPJ led 39-37 at the break.
In the second half, the Mountain Cats took their own six point lead nearly midway through, but Bloomsburg reeled them back in, and with 90 seconds to play, the score was tied for the 10th time in the game. UPJ's Patrick Grubbs scored the go-ahead basket with over a minute to play, but the Huskies failed to respond on either of their attempts on their next possession.
With under a minute to play, the Mountain Cats tried to run off time off the clock, but with the shot clock waning, Webster gave Bloomsburg new life on a steal with six seconds to play. Coming out of a subsequent timeout, Grubbs blocked the Huskies' final layup attempt and secured his team's two-point win.
The Huskies handled the ball well, turning the ball over a season-low 11 times, but were unable to drain shots, connecting on only 27 of 69 shots and making only a pair of three-pointers. Jesse Betar (Altoona, Altoona) led the Huskies with four assists, adding 11 points of his own. Two other Bloomsburg players scored in the double-digits as Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill) logged 14 and Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport, Williamsport) had 13.
The Huskies now look forward to the winter break and will hit the court for their next game on January 3, 2011, in a home matchup against IUP at 7:30.
