Men's Swimming Races At Zippy Invitational

AKRON, OH – Days one and two are completed and in the books for the Bloomsburg University men's swimming team, who earned many PSAC Championship qualifying times during the Friday and Saturday night finals at the Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.

Mike Wallace (Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg) finished seventh in the 50-free in the 'A' Final with a time of 21.40. Wallace's time breaks the mark of 22.51 for a PSAC Championship qualifying time. In the same event in the 'B' final, Juan Castaneda (Shamokin, Shamokin Area) (21.81) placed 19th and Bryan Masilotti (Vineland, N.J., Vineland) (21.92) posted a 21st-place finish. These were also PSAC Championship qualifying times for the Huskies. Wallace, Castaneda, and Masilotti teamed up with Mike Lightner (Lebanon, Cedar Crest) in the 200-free to post a seventh-place finish out of 16 teams with a time of 1:25.61. This time earns the team an NCAA 'A' cut time (cut time sits at 1:31.09) and shatters the PSAC Championship qualifying mark for this event (1:49.56). Tim Dorsch (Schwenksville, Souderton Area) joined Wallace, Lightner, and Castaneda in the 400-medley, finishing seventh out of 14 teams with a time of 3:29.37.

In the 'B' Final in the 500-free, Brendan Malone (Horsham, Hatboro-Horsham) ended with a time of 4:54.13, carding a 16th-place finish. Pat Malone (Sewell, N.J., Goucester Catholic) raced in the 200-IM in the 'B' Final and crossed at 1:58.40, coming in 14th. Both times here as well made the mark for PSAC Championship qualifying times.

On Saturday night, the 400-medley team of Wallace, Lightner, Castaneda, and Michael Busada (Bloomsburg, Columbia County Christian) finished 10th out of 14 schools, crossing in a time of 1:36.51. Kyle Weisenbach (Lincoln University, Avon Grove) competed in the 400-IM, doing so in the 'B' Final, clocking in with a time 4:16.45. P. Malone finished in the top spot in the 'C' Final with a finish of 4:16.44.

The highlight of the day for the Huskies was the second-place performance in the 'A' Final by Castaneda with his 50.05 timing in the 100-fly. Castaneda picked up another PSAC Championships qualifying time for his effort. Chip Benedict (Harrisburg, Bishop McDevitt) (53.28) and Mark DiLemmo (Doylestown, Central Bucks East) (53.58) swam in the 'B' Final in the 100-fly.

Wallace next saw action in the 200-free in the 'B' Final, finishing with a time of 1:48.61. Castaneda next competed in the 100-breast in the 'B' Final, finishing 59.94, earning another PSAC Championships qualifying time. Busada (1:00.91) did not finish too far behind Castaneda in the same event.

Derek Straub (Sinking Spring, Wilson) performed well on the day, carding tied for sixth place in the 100-back in the 'A' Final, doing so in 52.70. This time was good enough to earn Straub a PSAC Championships qualifying time. Lightner completed his swim in the 100-back in the 'B' Final, posting a 54.09 finish. A PSAC Championships qualifying time was awarded to Lightner for his performance.

On Sunday morning, the preliminary races will take place at 9 a.m. The final session will start at 4 p.m.
