MANSFIELD – Bloomsburg University split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader with Mansfield on Saturday, winning 9-8 in the opener before falling 15-8 in game two.
In game one, the Huskies got out to a quick start with some help from the Mansfield defense. Bloomsburg picked up four runs in the first off just two hits, as the Mountaineers committed four errors.
Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg, Mechanicsburg Area) and
Seth Pauling (Allenwood, Montgomery) had RBI singles for the Huskies. Mansfield got two back in its half of the opening inning before
Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Mifflinburg Area) nailed a two-run shot to center, giving the Huskies a 6-2 lead.
Mansfield picked up two more in the third and three in the sixth to knot the score at seven after a
Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg, Central Columbia) homer in the top half of the inning. The Huskies took the lead in the seventh, getting back-to-back singles from
Eric Ebert (Holland, Council Rock South ) and Pauling to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over and a deep fly out by Ianiero brought Ebert home to put Bloomsburg up one. A single by
Tony Donofry (Newtown, Council Rock North) one batter later drove in Pauling, giving the Huskies a 9-7 advantage heading into the final half inning.
The Mountaineers tried to rally, getting a leadoff homer from Chris Coleman, but Mansfield went down 1-2-3 after that, giving Bloomsburg the victory.
Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ, Phillipsburg) picked up the win in relief, striking out two and giving up two hits over the final 1.1 innings. Donofry and Pauling each picked up two hits while Lloyd and Ianiero had two RBI apiece.
Game two started well for the Huskies again, as Bloomsburg picked up two quick runs in the first off RBI hits from
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg, Blue Mountain) and
Corey Eisenhart (Dover, Dover). After Mansfield tied it up with one run in each of the first two innings, the Huskies scored three runs on three hits in the third, including an RBI double off the bat of Wise. The Mountaineers, however, responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half, tying up the score at five apiece.
Mansfield took control over the next two innings, getting three runs in each while Bloomsburg was able to manage just one, getting an RBI single from Eisenhart in the fifth. The Huskies did narrow the game to three runs with a two-run sixth, getting another RBI double by Wise, but the Mountaineers came back with four runs in their half of the inning and went on to win by seven runs.
Wise and Eisenhart each picked up three hits and three RBI apiece while
Chris Tressler (Lewistown, Lewistown) and Lloyd each added two hits.
With their weekend split with Mansfield, the Huskies (12-24, 8-12) have moved up to fifth in the PSAC East, one spot away from a tournament bid. They will host Lock Haven on Tuesday for a doubleheader schedule to start at 1:00 p.m.
