GREENWOOD, Ind. – After excelling both on the field and in the classroom,
Grant Russo (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) has been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Second Team as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Â
The redshirt-sophomore earned a 4.00 grade-point-average as a finance major while completing his undergraduate degree. Russo made an instant impact as a member of the Huskies, leading the team with a .419 batting average, 65 hits, 56 runs and 36 stolen bases. His 36 stolen bases broke the Huskies' single season stolen bases record originally set in 1997 by John Stillo.
Â
Russo claimed numerous postseason awards this season, including being named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete of the Year. The outfielder was also earned a Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-America Honorable Mention. Russo swept the All-Region ballots, tabbing first team honors from the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings and the D2CCA.
Â
It is the third time in program history that a member of the Huskies' baseball team has landed one of its own on a CSC Academic All-America team. Russo joins Cole Swiger who earned back-to-back third team recognitions in 2020 and 2021.
Â
The Sugarloaf native is joined on the second team by fellow PSAC players Brady McGuire from Seton Hill and Ty Sherman from Shippensburg.
