Bloomsburg Rallies to Split with Lock Haven

Tony Donofry's walk-off double in game two gave the Huskies a 7-6 come-from-behind victory

BLOOMSBURG—Tony Donofry's (Newtown, Council Rock North) walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth in game two rallied Bloomsburg University to a split with Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. Bloomsburg lost the opener 7-3 before winning the nightcap 7-6.

In game one, the Bald Eagles would get all the runs they needed in the opening inning, scoring four, with RBI base knocks from Brian Kochlik, Scott Gaston and Nick Hoddinott. The Huskies picked up runs in the first two innings, getting an RBI double from Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Mifflinburg Area) and a two-run homerun from Seth Pauling (Allenwood, Montgomery), giving Lock Haven a 5-3 advantage thru two.

After a rough start, starter Mitch Troy (Elkton, MD, St. Mark's )settled down on the mound for the Huskies, shutting down Lock Haven until the Bald Eagles were able to manage two insurance runs in the top of the seventh off reliever Chris Carter (Bartonsville, Pocono Mt. East)pulling off the four-run win.

Game two went back and forth as Lock Haven struck first with one run in the top of the first. The Huskies responded in the second, as a groundout by Corey Eisenhart (Dover, Dover) brought in Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg, Mechanicsburg Area)tying the score. The Bald Eagles came right back in the third, getting a homer from Mark Strouse, and RBI triple from Gaston and a sacrifice fly from Matt McCamley to take a 4-1 lead. The Huskies fought back again with three of their own in the bottom half, getting RBI hits from Donofry and Wise and a sac fly from Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg, Blue Mountain) to tie the score back up at four apiece.

The Bald Eagles scored two runs in the sixth and took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh where with two outs and Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg, Central Columbia) on second, Lloyd homered to left center, tying to the game sending it to extra innings. After an inning and a half of scoreless ball, Ianiero singled with one out and Donofry drove him home with his gapper to the wall in left center, giving the Huskies the win.

Reliever Tyler Gansner (Lancaster, Lampeter Strasburg)picked up the win after starter Matt Dean (Gilbertsville, Boyertown)and David Langton (Mount Carmel, Mt. Carmel Area) combined to go 8.0 innings with six strikeouts and nine hits allowed. Donofry, Ianiero and Wise each had two hits while Donofry and Lloyd added two RBI apiece.

The Huskies (13-25, 8-12) are back in action this weekend as they travel to Kutztown on Friday before returning home on Saturday to host the Golden Bears. First pitch for both days is set for 1:00 p.m.
