BLOOMSBURG - The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped a twinbill to ninth-ranked Kutztown on Saturday, losing by scores of 7-3 and 10-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.
After Jared Frey homered for Kutztown in the top of the first in the opening game,
Tony Donofry (Newtown, Council Rock North) matched it with a solo shot of his own, knotting the score at one apiece heading into the second. The Golden Bears then got on a roll, scoring at least one run in each of the next four innings, including three in the third, to take a 7-1 lead. The Huskies picked up two runs in their half of the sixth, loading the bases before
Corey Eisenhart (Dover, Dover) scored on a wild pitch and a lineout to center by
Keith Meyer (Richboro, Council Rock South) scored
Seth Pauling (Allenwood, Montgomery).
Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby, Upper Darby) started and went five innings on the mound for the Huskies, striking out seven. Donofry went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, run scored and a stolen base.
Kutztown got up on the Huskies quick in game two, getting a solo shot by Shayne Houck. Starting pitchers
Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska, New Hope Solebury) and Tyler Persun then each traded multiple scoreless innings, as both teams managed just eight hits through three-and-a-half innings.
The Huskies got on the board in the fourth, tying the score at one when
Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg, Mechanicsburg Area) scored on a throwing error by Houck. After the Golden Bears responded with three runs the following inning to take a 4-1 lead, Bloomsburg got a sacrifice fly from
Chris Tressler (Lewistown, Lewistown) to get back to within two runs.
The Golden Bears then opened up a big lead, getting six runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-2 advantage. The Huskies were able to get one back in the bottom of the seventh, getting an RBI single from
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg, Blue Mountain) before eventually falling.
Donofry went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Kramer went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg (13-27, 8-14) travels to Kutztown tomorrow to finish its weekend series with the Golden Bears.
