SHIPPENSBURG— Bloomsburg University split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader with Shippensburg on Tuesday, losing 10-5 in the opener before winning 10-6 in the nightcap.
The Red Raiders scored early and often in game one, getting seven runs on eight hits in their half of the second inning to open up a huge lead. Shippensburg added two more in the next stanza to take a 9-0 advantage. After the Red Raiders scored one more in the fifth to make it 10-0, the Huskies got on the board with two runs in the sixth, including an RBI single by Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg, Blue Mountain). Bloomsburg got another three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to five, getting RBI hits from Kramer and Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Mifflinburg Area).
Kramer was the main source of offense for the Huskies, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Devin McLaughlin (Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg) also had three hits and Seth Pauling (Allenwood, Montgomery) added two more.
Bloomsburg rebounded strong in the second game, getting on the board first with a solo shot from Tony Donofry (Newtown, Council Rock North) in the top of the first. The Huskies came back with six runs in the next inning, getting an RBI double from Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg, Central Columbia) and RBI singles from Chris Tressler (Lewistown, Lewistown) and Kramer.
The Red Raiders cut their deficit to three, getting three runs in the third and one more in the fifth. The big hit being a three-run shot by Cody Kulp in the third. The Huskies added insurance runs in the final two innings, getting a sacrifice fly from Ianiero that scored Corey Eisenhart (Dover, Dover) in the sixth and a two-run blast from Lloyd in the seventh. Shippensburg did threaten in its last at-bat, but managed only two runs and fell to the Huskies by four.
Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ, Phillipsburg) got the start for Bloomsburg, picking up with win after a five-inning, five-hit performance. Four Huskies picked up multiple hits, with Kramer coming through with a 3-for-4 game with two RBI and a run scored. Ianiero, Tressler and Lloyd each added two RBI apiece.
The Huskies (10-22, 6-10) will take on Mansfield this weekend in an important PSAC East showdown. Bloomsburg will host on Friday and will travel to take on the Mountaineers on Saturday, with each doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
